“Why” is sometimes a question that can shorten the heck out of a conversation. I mean, some of the videos on those old TV shows that were just collections of videos… (and the ones on Facebook now) are things you can’t question if you don’t want the magic taken away. For instance, I watched a video collage (is that what you call those? The ones that have a series of little videos strung together into one larger, funnier video) the other day of people doing face plants in various places.
One of the face plants was a woman going down an escalator and suddenly, whump, she goes down and scatters herself badly by the time she gets to the bottom of the moving stairs. Fine. But then you ask “Why”.
As in, “Why was there someone video-ing this woman (from behind) going down what is apparently an airport escalator?” It’s not security video. There’s no one else in frame. There’s nothing especially engaging about the woman one way or the other. But the video shows us this spectacular stumble and splatter… halfway down the escalator. Why, when the first half of the escalator ride was so uneventful, would someone continue video-ing this person… Unless she and the videographer had agreed beforehand that she would do something interesting on the ride down?
So here WE are with Lowell confronting the question, “Why”.
Let’s see if he can prove the videographer to be essential to the process.
Oh, those rich guys with their martinis and their steam rooms… Oh, how I long to be part of their expensive Trump-like world. Except I’d have the cigar, too. And a monocle. Dunno about the top hat.
How many times have I started conversations with my kids, or arranged meetings, or gone somewhere to accomplish something- and thought I had a reason. Sometimes, more than one reason. I like it when errands are done with, like, at least three reasons in mind.
And then, you get the point when you realize that your reasons break down one by one, and finally… You’re at Target SuperStore for, essentially, whatever you see that you can buy and make it look like you didn’t discover that you were on a fool’s errand the whole time. Poptarts and a diet Mountain Dew. Y’know, like you meant to come in for that. Maybe a Cadbury egg or two, in season.
Lunch in the corporate headquarters. I imagine it used to be pretty grim, but have you SEEN the kinds of commissaries these places build these days? Man, sometimes I wish I didn’t work from home, and could wander down to the ol’ HQ lunchroom and watch the sushi guys lay out some rolls… maybe stop by the soup station, or maybe the taco bar… fondue counter…
Nuts. Now I’m hungry.
I think I got the last of a loaf of bread and some cheese slices downstairs…
Yep, that’s the best thing to do… Write down all the stuff you get up to. All y’all remember that, now. And carry it around. And show it to people. People with cameras turned on you.
That way, when the police pick you up, they don’t have a lot of crazy bother trying to pin down exactly what to charge you with. Those folks have enough to worry about.
Had another inexplicable jump in readership yesterday. I may be able to search through the data and figure out what’s going on… or it may just be another one of those things where a couple dozen extra new readers turn up one day for reasons I never can work out. Whatever the cause, I like it… and wish it’d happen all month sometime.
Another inexplicable thing I see is the security updates about who’s been blocked from logging in and screwing around on the site. There’s somebody in Russia who needs to get a different hobby. Probably some automated program someone’s written, but I’m tired of seeing that he, or she, or it has been blocked- again- after twenty attempts to log in. Same, but not as often, with some ass in France, and a couple others here in the states. Very worrisome, but more readers means more chances that you fall under the gaze of someone with wicked plots in mind, I guess.
Anyhow, enjoy Kelly’s gathering of footage for his giant Exposé, tell a friend or two to read Hubris, and if I suddenly go offline and the site is replaced with a Russian ad for mail-order brides… well, it wasn’t MY idea.
Seems fitting to take a minute to thank everyone for supporting Hubris, whether by reading it or doing even more- sharing links to the site on social media, telling a friend to check out the site, clicking on the ads, clicking on the Vote Hubris button, donating at the ‘You & Hubris’ button, being a Patreon patron, or buying a book. Thanks, everyone! All that stuff is really helpful in keeping Hubris afloat.
And I should welcome the two new Patrons that joined up last month, which means that this month, Patreon says I get to send you your goodies.
So, again, thanks for reading, clicking, sharing, telling, tip-jarring, patronning, buying, voting and anything else you do. Like commenting. That’s fun, too. Do that.
Lowell’s long journey comes to an end. Oh, how happy he is now that his every dream has come true. Now everything will be easy peasy.
That’s how THAT usually goes.
Day to day corporate life must be very difficult. That must be the reason they make the big bucks, right?
Hahahahahahahahahahaha! Just kidding. We all know they make the big bucks because they control where big bucks go.
**Also, sorry about the delayed posting. My watch is really weird, with lots of alternate settings. I could have sworn today was supposed to be the ninth.
