Well, I owe you guys several more freebee extra comic strips, as the tip jar has been plumped up recently.
It’s come at a tricky time, when I don’t seem to be able to get traction with three or four advertising jobs, and I’m behind on The Buckets and everything. But you’ll get ’em, yes you will!
‘Cause you guys are the BEST, and I wanna be good enough for you.
Day three! I haven’t done anything spectacular with the new format yet, but I’m getting a handle on the workaday aspects of it.
Dunno about the little blurby things at the bottom, but they’re fun.
Well, reading the strip is different with the new format- I knew that would be the case… but what I didn’t know is that writing the new format would be different also.
Somehow, I assumed that I’d be writing the strip the exact same way and then working the drawings into this new and daring vertical stack.
But it doesn’t work that way.
My brain short circuits when faced with this new shape to fill. The almost automatic way I visualized the traditionally shaped strip was out the window and impossible to retrieve. It’s very weird.
So, I’m going to stick with the new format until it has a chance to take hold, then see if it really does work to my advantage and yours.
For those of you who don’t like to scroll down to read a whole strip, I apologize. But the fact is that it does allow me to unveil a gag to you by degrees instead of allowing you your ingrained 2 second comic strip reading time. Did you know that’s what they discovered about traditional comic strips in the newspaper? 2 seconds. That’s what the average person spent on each average strip. Bam. Two. It’s not that I’m trying to bog you down or anything, but the web allows for the art form to be approached and consumed in a different mode. The different mode might actually be psychologically advantageous, for the sake of more room to tell a joke, if not for the jolt of seeing an old thing in a new form.
So. In a couple of weeks we’ll see if I’ve made something good or something just different. And then we’ll see if it’s worth keeping.
You guys continue to let me know your votes on it in the comment section. And if anyone wants to keep count of the ‘pro’ and ‘con’ opinions, well, by golly, I’m not going to stop you. Just lemme know what you discover, right?
Notice anything different today? Well, so did Hubris and Paste, apparently, because what else could have rendered them speechless?
But because YOU persevere, and read all the way down here to this blurb, you get to learn that I went, this past weekend, to the National Cartoonist Society’s Southeast Chapter Annual Fall Meeting. It’s more fun to attend than to type, I notice. At any rate, the great Wiley Miller (Non Sequitur) was one of our guest speakers. I’ve been a fan of his for a long time, first because he draws beautifully, and second because I heard him predict the end of Editorial Cartooning As We Know It, and the reasons for its demise, accurately early on and noticed that he flourished as well as anyone could in comic strips hit their decline by being intelligent and treating it like a business he was involved in.
And he pointed out that his Non Sequitur Sunday cartoons’ vertical format read better than traditional two-tier horizontal formats, partly because it doesn’t give you a sneak peek at the punchline as you go from the last panel of the first tier to the first panel of the second, but also because it’s a fluid way to read comics- allowing the readers eye to flow downward in the story as it is wont to do when allowed to roam in a natural way.
And that, kiddies, is how WebComics work, too. So here’s the latest experiment- the vertical panel order in Hubris. We’ll see how it goes. It’s going to make arranging the cartoons for book format a little time consuming down the road, to be sure, but we’ll smash the crud out of that bridge when we come to it.
Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with a big ol’ number two…
Forgive the joke if 1) your local colloquialisms don’t include that particular scatological nomenclature or
2) ya don’t like poo jokes.
Now I’ve heard that the background here on the site does something wonky in the new Apple OS 8.02 for iPads. Anyone else getting that? I rely on your expertise in these areas, since I don’t typically have the newest cool stuff or run the newest cool software or have a brilliant staff of people who look after these kinds of things.
