Hubris- To Be Continued

I don’t know if I’ve ever done a real “to be continued” cartoon before.

You guys probably know.

By the way- a giant stack of Patron Goodies went out last week.  I’m finally catching up on the long overdue stuff I should have sent ages ago.

That means, for all the newer Patrons- you get a little extra stuff.

And for all the long term Patrons… you get more stuff.  I hope you don’t already have the things already.

Next up, I’m finally going to have the ‘Team Hubris” embroidered patches made.  We should all have patches, don’t you think?

Every so often, it’s good to have a character express his humanity- to take a moment to be vulnerable and be able to admit it.

If you know people like Paste, you know they only do that when they’re yanking your chain.  The unexamined life might, according to old wisdom, not be worth living… but it can certainly have a place in the comics.

Hubris- Flappity flappity flap

As I get older, I miss things, and I discover new things.

I can’t really say whether the things I miss or the things I discover have at all been good for me.

They do keep me amused, though, I’ll tell ya that.

I’ve reached the age when business associates often aren’t old enough to remember the great stuff I do.  TV shows, Comic Books, Toys.

The new things I discover are the same crap you’ve overheard your elders speak about your whole life.  Your body betrays you.  Age isn’t a gradual process, but a series of abrupt horrors.

All that stuff, combined with being of an age to pay attention to the news and, like every generation before mine, decide that society has honestly gone into the toilet in my lifetime, leads me toward what should be depression.

Then I remember that I’m a cartoonist.  And I draw a funny picture or two.  Like today’s cartoon.  Then I feel much, much better.

So I might as well share, right?

Hubris- Spa Treatment

Mud treatments.  They crop up.  People have put mud on their skin for a long time for a lot of reasons.

Of course, I’m talking about movies and TV.  I Love Lucy.  There was a mud pack gag there, right?  And Arnold Schwarzenegger.  He used mud to disguise his body heat from The Predator.  In The Rabbit Of Seville, Bugs puts concrete on Elmer’s face in place of a mud treatment.  In Lonesome Dove, Janey puts mud on Roscoe’s wasp stings.  Yes, Mud for all reasons and for all seasons.  Mud.

Feel free to fill the comment section with your own knowledge of mud poultices and mud pies.  It’ll distract you from the fact that I filled this space with random gabble because I couldn’t think of anything interesting to say today.

Hubris- Interview ‘Do

So, the poison ivy that I mentioned a while back.  Turns out… the poison ivy had ceased to be the problem.  I had either scratched, or picked up some dirt and crud during a fall on the trails or… who knows.  Cellulitis.  My leg swelled up and was turning an angry horrific purple-y red.  And I finally went to the doctor.  My family is waiting for our new insurance to kick in, so I limped to one of those Doc-In-The-Box things at a pharmacy (thinking it was probably cheaper than visiting my regular doctor.  And faster, which seemed to be important by the time I panicked and went.)  The Doc in the box was a very nice lady who sent me to the clinic straight down the street as fast as I could safely get there.  Some of you might remember the blood clot horror earlier this year.  I sure as hell did while getting myself to the clinic.  Now it’s been a couple of days on antibiotics and I’m not quite so concerned that I’ll got to sleep and wake up dead.

There was a funny spin I was going to put on this, but all I got now is a Public Service Announcement.  I don’t know whether it should be “always have insurance”, or “don’t scratch poison ivy”, or “If you have poison ivy, don’t let your offroad unicycle fling you into a tree, and thence to the dirt.”  or “Don’t wait til it’s too late, go to the Doc-In-The-Box” or what the heck the message is, but by golly, there’s a message here somewhere.

How about “Ride Hard, Keep Clean, Marry a Doctor.”  No, that can’t be it…

Hubris- Countdown

I had a discussion with a friend of mine about the Peanuts cartoon that ran this past Saturday.  Peanuts is a comic strip you don’t normally have to recall the previous day’s cartoon to enjoy, but this was a Summer Camp Story arc, and involved a kid who didn’t want to talk with anyone.  It seemed to be part of a running gag because it wasn’t necessarily funny by itself, but only when tied to the rest of the series.

Today’s Hubris is kinda like that.  Maybe not funny by itself… but it’s part of the pace.  I guess it’ll look good in the book.
