Sundays are weird. It’s like they’re a different kind of thing than the other six days of the week.
Do you feel that? Or is it just ’cause I’ve been doing comic strips so long that the format change has crept into the feeling of the day itself?
I grabbed a different brush today. You might not think about high-end watercolor brushes, and the fact that they wear out.
I caught myself working with a newer brush and really enjoying all the snap and the little tiny lines it can make.
Every career has its little things like that- the sort of thing that people in different careers can’t be aware of. That’s fun to think about.
I think I mentioned when this one first ran that it’s pretty much wrung straight from life.
I loved me some whitewater kayaking, and there were some months when I only got to go on one weekend, maybe. And so I got one of those mood-setting CDs (remember CDs?) and put it in the CD player (remember CD players?) and it was sounds of whitewater, more or less. I think it was a two and a half minute loop, though- spun out for an hour.
And yeah… Whitewater sounds like static. Or something being sizzled on a grill. Or… I dunno. It’s white noise. After a while, you don’t even hear it- it’s just for blocking out other sounds.
So maybe I didn’t buy static. Maybe I bought an invisible wall to keep out the sounds of the rest of the world.
Might have been worth it after all.
For those of you who like to invent your own variations on the punchlines, here’s the alternate for Paste’s final comment that I considered to be overused, even if it’s pretty funny:

I’d love to say that I’ll pick up the pace, but starting tomorrow, there are more and more cartoonists coming into town for the 70th Annual Reubens Awards Weekend. I’m the only NCS member here in town, so there’s lots of moving boxes and goody-bag stuffing, and long days filled with, let’s be honest here, CARTOONISTS. Ah, they’re a fine buncha Reubens, they are. I’m excited… but I don’t know if the publishing schedule will hold up. How about a couple of updates that are photos of cartoonists?
The Fill-In cartooning proceeds apace. We’re that much closer to the new book!
