Mal! Look at Mal, manning up and telling Shelly that he doesn’t know about fishing at all.
If this were a sit-com, he’d lie and keep up the pretense that he knows all about it and then get in over his head. Probably literally.
And there’d be a laugh track all over the thing.
And that guy from that show, you know the guy that’s in all those other shows since that one big show he was in during the 90’s? He’d be playing Ry.
It’d be sad.
Mal is NOT the kind of person to take to a new hobby all of a sudden, do you think?
His familiarity with the concept seems lacking, somehow.
We can only hope that Shelly won’t judge him harshly.
Mal’s expectations were pretty low. Shelly’s were almost instantly high.
They could be in a Sit-Com about now, and the dialogue wouldn’t have to change at all!
Hubriscomics as Sit-Com. If anyone here knows someone at Netflix, maybe clue ’em in! You get ‘Producer’ credit for that, nowadays, right?
Oh, Houghton Hollow. That’s the little valley at the end of Houghton lake (named for the famed explorer Sir James Houghton-Houghton) where the dam was built way back in the 1970s. There were some steep banks in the hollow that made the engineers grin with glee as they contemplated their gorgeous new dam. Plus, they got to flood half a town after it was built. Three of the engineers went in on a scuba diving company where you can dive down to “Lower Houghton Grove” and sit in a submerged van, and photograph yourself in a submerged school playground, and swim vaguely near the cemetery and then swim away again fast because it’s freakin’ creepy as hell, with all the drowned trees around it and the headstones and statues and all.
They used to tell a whole bunch of different ghost stories about the submerged town, but eventually they all got smooshed into one big ghost story about a Wukilar that was the mayor’s cursed son (or the cursed Mayor’s son, whichever) and who lived in the church next to the cemetery (graveyard, really, but who keeps track) where he lost his hands or his head in a boating accident. And now he either wanders the graves hoping a statue will lose its head that he can take for his own, or is listening to a walkman and can’t turn it off ’cause he’s missing… well, it’s a weird ghost story anyhow.
That got away from me.
…What I was going to say was “Ron ain’t wrong. Gonna be a lively weekend.”
Somebody once told Mal the old saying “What do you hate? By such are you known” but Mal thought the guy was being closed minded and snotty, so Mal didn’t listen to him and figured he was just stupid.
Little brother Ryan, though, must have realized at some point that the things about other people that irk you the most are typically that things that irk you the most about yourself.

Like most people who work alone in a quiet room with no one to disagree with me, I think I can fix the whole dang world.
Every so often, I remember that there are still unfinished Hubris comic strips that never made it past of some of the later syndicate mailings. There aren’t many, but they either didn’t fit the tone of the final version of the strip, or they didn’t fit into the generally story-line-ish arrangement I used when first doing this website. This one, I think, was just left back while I assumed I’d one day pull it out and use it, like the 120 or so ‘finished’ Hubris comic strips that convinced me that I could launch a webcomic. Possibly, this one could have been modified to fit into the recent hiking trip Hubris and Kara were on… if I’d remembered it existed. If you like, you can imagine that I went ahead, redrew it, colored it, and loaded it up at the end of last week or something.
It’s probably from 2002. The editor that was looking over Hubris had graciously said I didn’t have to keep sending finished black and white inked-in cartoons, but we could progress with roughs. That’s why this one is so… rough. I had a pile of these rough versions by the time I decided the syndicates had seen enough and I had to get back to working on other things. Most of them got inked and colored and you’ve seen them, starting way back in November of 2010. Some, though… will show up here on Thursdays for a bit.
So, there you go. A throwback Thursday cartoon of a Hubris adventure that may or may not exist, depending on how you see things.
Okay, this one’s sort of a departure from the usual here at Hubriscomics, isn’t it?
The concept made me laugh. I hope the finished cartoon makes you laugh.
For those of us in the U.S., happy Memorial Day. Remember folks like my Grandfather who was in WWII, although he never said if he was in any particular fighting… at least not when I was in earshot. He did, however, send home photos of ‘keep out’ signs on New Guinea. The signs were hung with human skulls. I assume this was well harrowing enough without doing any shooting at belligerent folks from opposing armies who would be shooting back and who presumably would NOT then go on to eat anyone. He didn’t seem to want to say much about any of it, by the time I was old enough to have any interesting questions. But he was my Grandpa, and he was really cool.
