More of HeroesCon

Here are some more entertaining shots from HeroesCon-  I really should have gone around, I suppose, and gotten photos of other cartoonists and things, but lets face it- We weren’t there to have our photos made.  The Cosplayers, though?  Kinda there for a purpose.  They announced via the P.A. that you were to use common Con etiquette and ask permission for photos, but with the nice crowd of folks that go to HeroesCon, shouting out “Hey! Photo Op!” and waggling your camera with a smile is perfectly acceptable.

I mentioned that I went to HeroesCon 2016 in Charlotte NC, and it’s taken me this long to publish any of the photos.  Sorry about that.  Here’s to get you started:

Kudos to you if you can name all the characters.  Admiration to you if you can even pin down what media in which the characters appear.

So, on Sunday morning, Mark Simon and I went for a little skating.  Old guys, and each of us had a new board to play with- He because his son newly works at a skate shop. Me because I bought up some parts years ago with a neat idea for a really nice custom build… that I finally just slapped together and rode.  Here’s a photo of me about to lose the board to my hind side as I had to R-U-N-N-O-F-T to the fore:

And here’s me and Bill Morrison (The Simpsons, Bongo Comics) you’ll have to guess which of us is which, the disguises are so utterly complete.

And here’s a photo of one corner of a room that had been filled with books and goodies to be put in bags for the St Jude kids.  All the stuff eventually made it into bags somehow… Thanks to my kids, Lonnie Easterling and his kids, Dave Garst, and Dr. Aaron Shafer and his kids.

Did you know there’s a Hirschfeld caricature of Danny Thomas at St Jude?  There is.  It’s waaaaaay up on the wall so that cartoonists can’t grab it and hide it in their stuff.

Three Gregs.  Greg Walker (Beetle Bailey) Greg Evans (Luann) and that guy.

And there’s Mark Simon doing a nice turn at the top of that rise.  His new build had really nice bearings and really soft wheels.  Soundless, around the park.  Unnerving, you might call it.

You asked for photos…

So here we are-

That’s Dave Garst (aspiring cartoonist groupie and all-around excellent person), BJ Higdon (Son of Bruce Higdon, Punster and Caricaturist), Mark Simon (HotShot Storyboard Artist, and Modern Media Entrepreneur who obviously doesn’t sleep), John Hambrock (Creator of The Brilliant Mind Of Edison Lee and Co-Host of The Kenosha Festival Of Cartooning) Todd Clark (Who creates Lola and is one of MAD’s usual gang of idiots) Rich Powell (Creator of Wide Open, and another of MAD’s usual gang) John Read (founder of the magazine Stay Tooned, Caricaturist, and movie studio grunt), My son Gideon (JROTC nut and producer of an airsoft gun video here a while back that he should now make more of)

And me, sprawled on the floor.

The Paintballers

So, that was the ‘before’ photo.  Here are the afters:

Todd took a few shots.

John Hambrock, too, took a couple of shots to the body.

Rich Powell shows us that getting shot in the eye, which sounds bad, isn’t quite so- as your eye is armored as many other anatomical parts are not…

Mark stopped a LOT of paintballs.  Probably had nothing to do with the red shirt.

Yes, the shirt started off red. It didn’t get that way during the game.

Quick Break.  No bones, but y’know.  Breaking.  We look a jolly bunch, don’t we? ‘Specially Rich, who kinda knew what he was doing (Ex-Marine, you see) and who stayed pretty darn happy under fire. Disturbing.

I was shot in the head.  Not armored, my head. Owwie. Thanks, Todd.  Thanks pantloads.

HeadShot

Not that you wanna see my hairy, specky back or anything, but guess how many times they shot me in the back.  Go on. Guess.

Now, the next day, this was Mark’s leg.  Color’s getting good, yeah?

Bruise02

So, I finally got my wish of having cartoonists body paint one another.  Tomorrow, more photos!  Skating, and also cartoonists in fancy clothes.

I’m doing a thing at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. I’m lucky to be included in such a stellar group of well-known cartoonists, and yet, there I am.  See if you can spot me in the poster.

Here’s the latest press release:

Come mix and mingle with the world’s best cartoonists, while supporting the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The evening will feature Cartoonists Improv. Host cartoonists will be sitting at VIP tables. Enjoy festive food and spirits at this one-of-a-kind event. Featured hosts include Bill Morrison of The Simpsons, Steve McGarry of Minions, and Jeff Keane of Family Circus. The poster artwork really speaks for itself!  Feel free to share this on your websites, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Anywhere you’d like works!

Nice, right?  Share it around, willya?  Thanks!
