So this guy, a musician/artist type who was very influential when I was in high school, died today.  I did a little caricature to put on a Facebook post about explaining to my kids that when he sang about ‘1999’ it wasn’t a throwback thing, he was singing about a future we almost couldn’t picture, it was so far away.

And after I did the little digital caricature, I was asked to do a physical one.

Here’s both.  Whattaya think?

Cartoonists and you.

I know I keep putting up things for stuff around here, and no one wants to travel a million miles to do cartoony stuff,

but this one’s SPECIAL.  The National Cartoonist Society is coming to Memphis, and we’re drawing for the kids at St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

That night, after we’ve drawn for every kid we possibly can, there’s a Fundraiser dinner.  If you don’t wanna drive to Memphis to hang out with cartoonists, there’s still a chance to get in on the auction, which includes incredible prizes to bid on, such as a weekend with Jack Black in Hollywood, and being drawn into a MAD magazine movie parody.  Jump online and see how you can be a part of it.  Probably good for your soul. Definitely good for the kids.  Makes the cartoonist feel important… and you know how THEIR egos are. Cartoonists.  Psssh.

Do you smell smoke?

After languishing for … longer than I like to admit… another two projects are out the door.  If you’d like such a bowl or cup, you’ll either have to visit a particular gallery in Branson MO or order your thing through this site.  Though I warn ya- these vessels are crazy pricey.  The ones you see here aren’t even finished.  Imagine them so shiny that you can see what sort of light fixture is turned to it by its reflection on the polished surface.

I thought of doing a dragon on the flagon rather than the horse.  What do you think?  Should I have chosen reptile over mammal?

It’s that time of year again!  There seem to be competitions needing shirts and posters and… you get the idea.

Here’s one I did with a really outstanding art director-

I’ll be there.  You guys ought to come, too!  ‘Specially anyone who loves them some SUP and thinks you can go for THIRTY ONE miles!  Yeah.  Thirty one!  Yikes.

Digital Bits

I prefer to draw the whole comic strip on paper with lettering and everything- y’know just so I actually have a sketch and a finished piece of art aside from just having a web file to post.  But some days, you’ve gotta be a graphic designer and put the pieces and parts down in an efficient manner.

So, I did the layout/sketch (very loosely), then inked panel borders and lettering and bubbles.  Then, I made a whole ‘nother sheet of bits and pieces that could be colored and placed where needed.

And voila! after a little digital jazz, there’s a comic strip without a piece of original paper art that you can point to and say “That’s Wednesday’s cartoon.”
