You ever wonder what the Hubris gags sound like in my head before they wind up on paper and thereafter on your computer?
It’s probably not what you think. In fact, it’s what I think, and my brain’s not wired in an efficient manner.
So you’re getting the edited down images and words. Granted, I let myself roam fairly freely, but let’s take yesterday’s cartoon, for example. Mick’s trying to climb the wall. The description of that cartoon wandered far afield with concepts that will probably make it into the strip someday (Tshirt cannons and Red Bull cans… Teaser! Spoiler!)
On the other hand, sometimes I do pictures that elaborate on a few words. It’s easier to do when working with a partner.
Jay Schiller, years ago, sent me scripts for a Florida editorial cartoon we used to do. One of the scripts dealt with the death of Princess Diana.
His script said, “Draw a Paparazzi in the casket with her, taking a photo.” Nice. Elegant. Says a lot. Well done, Jay.
So I drew this:
I’m still very pleased with it. It’s dark, somber, it’s a subtle indictment of the practices of the paparazzi ( I think that anytime you’re followed down the street by shouting people who are taking your photo without permission and with intent for their own profit, that’s a bit of an attack, you know? Self defense come into play there? Maybe.)
So there you go. Words and Pictures.
I’m not much of a Team Sports person… but I work with a guy who is- Jay Schiller writes a cartoon called MoreOnTV that I draw. You guys have seen earlier ones here, and now you get to see the latest two. If you have anything to do with a college newspaper (or any other newspaper or website) that needs such content, you have to go to MCT Campus and get some MoreOnTV! Or, if you’re part of the general public, you could email ESPN and tell ’em how much they need MoreOnTV.
It’s been a while since I flogged another old comic strip here in the ‘Other’ content below the Hubris. So it’s time again for Bachelor & Sons! I was teamed up with Matt Tolbert (and his twin sons) to create a comic strip based on a newly single dad and his twin sons. One kid is sportish, the other one bookish. I did the best I could, and I assume that Matt’s twins (with him as the editor) did the best they could, but the syndicates weren’t biting. Of course, it’s a shame for this stuff to just rot on my computer or on Matt’s, so it might as well rot on your computer, too. Unless of course, you know of a nice site, web magazine or newspaper (or syndicate) who sees the value in such a thing, in which case we’ll happily resurrect it, I bet.
Okay, so here’s the second part of the top of my morning webcomics reading list:
(QUICK REMINDER. Hubris is kid friendly. This list… not so much. I’ll be posting the kid-friendly lists soon. You little guys and girls- these cartoons are just baffling and rude until after you’ve dated a few people and have decided on some important life choices. Til then, enjoy Hubris. Ignore these for the moment. You’ll be perfectly happy you did. For grown-ups, this is a fun list.)
Not Invented Here • Barnes & Zugale (this one used to have Southworth art. I hate to admit that I let it drop down my reading list on account of the art, but I did. Bad me. Bad! Good comic strip.)
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal • Zach Weiner
This is sort of the breaking point between strips that update more frequently (three times or more a week) and those that are supposed to update less frequently… and those that update at crazy times or not at all, or I haven’t figured it out yet, or something.
The Trenches • Kurtz, Krahulik, Holkins
Gutters • Sohmer and Guest Artists (once, it was ME!)
Two Guys and Guy • Rickard Jonasson
That looks like plenty for today. The list, like I said before is a LOT longer. And the stuff at the bottom of it is stuff that I just started looking at. Some of it will likely wind up in this tippy top list the next time I re-arrange my list. I’ll post some of the other good stuff later.
Hey. Sorry I’m so lazy about posting non-cartoon things on off days here at Hubris. I used to do better, and need to shape up.
But here’s one I’ve been planning on doing for a while. I got into a conversation with Hillary Price a while back about our respective morning reading lists. I thought it’d be fun to post a whole series of ‘What Do YOU Read’ articles. Of course, it’s easiest to start off with my list of things to read every morning.
Or, at least, ONE of my lists.
I have a GoComics list that shows up in an email every morning, or can be accessed by clicking ‘home’ when I go to my gocomics page. We’ll come back to those cartoons- they’re mostly syndicated features that I’ve developed a taste for over the years, with a scattering of ‘hey, that’s cool’ thrown in.
But the crazy list is the stuff I’ve cobbled together, from the web. It changes fairly often, but here’s the current very tippy top of the list. There’s way too many to do all at once here.
Oh, and if you’re under… what is it, 16 or 18 or whatever, you need a parent standing over your shoulder to tell you whether or not you can look at these sites. I try to keep Hubris friendly to all audiences, and something that anyone can be proud to say that he or she reads, but let’s be real… There are a LOT of audiences for the various and sundry webcomics. Some of these comics are for people who aren’t waiting around for Mom or Dad to make dinner for everyone. I don’t care how growed-up you think you are, if you’re 12, you aren’t going to GET some of these cartoons, no matter how well they’re drawn and written. You don’t have the tools yet, and you don’t want ’em. Yet. Look at Gil. You’ll get that one.
Here we go:
Least I Could Do • Sohmer, DeSousa
Girls With Slingshots • Danielle Corsetto
PvP • Scott Kurtz (you’ll have to click on ‘comic’ to get to the comic. Surprise!)
Our Valued Customers • Mr. Tim Chamberlain
Scenes From A MultiVerse • Jon Rosenberg
Reptillis Rex • William Tallman
That’s enough to be going on with, but not my list altogether- not by a long shot. These are at the top of the long list because they update often enough and/or are exciting or interesting enough for me to put them near the top and leave them there. Starslip Crisis is one that I wish was still on the list. And Not Invented Here is at the top of Part 2 of this list, and used to be higher up, but I move things around for wonky reasons. There are others that would be here but only update once a week or so, and therefore are farther down the list. You’ll see as I post updates.
If you like, peruse these a bit. Tell ’em I sent ya, if you comment there. I’ve met some of the creators and they’re good folks. I’d like Hubris to be as well respected as these. Got to keep workin’!
Hey. I’ve been remiss in updating on non-cartoon days lately. Sorry about that. Been busy. Twisted my ankle at the skatepark. Wife was in a car wreck. Kids homework… let’s see… what else? Oh yeah! Kenosha! I’m frantically trying to get things ready for Kenosha. That’s what kicked off the Hubris book (HERE) and I had a proposal in for a Buckets book, too, but they’re not going for it at the moment. There’s no time to get it done for Kenosha, but I bet I can have a Buckets book ready for everyone for Christmas gifts.
Anyhow, I bought a new laptop, so I can confidently go ’round and show off stuff at Kenosha, and next year- Comics Conventions! Heyaaaah! Do you go to comics conventions? Do you want to see me there and buy a book or an original comic strip or a sketch? I’m in the market for some Cons! Let me know which one(s) you go to and I’ll do my best to be there!
Just for funsies, here’s a couple of cartoons you can also see (HERE) at MoreOnTV!
It’s been a while since I dropped in another page of Weirdbeard, so here’s number 5.
Yeah, I know… Crusade, Knight, Pirates… the timeline is all tangled. I ignored all historical accuracy in order to shovel in as many fun things to draw as possible. Ooooh first rope, then chain mail!
Feeling boring today, folks. You get some old gag cartoons. There were done at different times with different people, different tools, and different markets in mind.
Some of you read The Buckets, besides coming here. Did you know that I work on another regular feature? I’ve mentioned it before, but here it is again. It’s MoreOnTV, written by Jay Schiller. It pokes fun at Media in general, in the categories of Entertainment, Sports, and Politics… and especially where they overlap.
And man, these days, do they ever overlap.
The ultimate expression of MoreOnTV (Moron TV, y’know.) would be to see Maury Povich guest host an episode of Entertainment Tonight about a FOX news flap concerning Bruce Jenner and Monica Lewinsky on Dancing With The “Stars”, going up against, say, Chas Bono and Sarah Palin’s daughter while pregnant with Tiger Woods baby (not sayin’ which one would be pregnant) as a way to promote (or protest) Cuban nationals having out-of-wedlock babies paid for by U.S. health insurance multi-nationals jointly owned by Mitt Romney, Richard Simmons, and… I haven’t worked out how to get Neo-nazis in there, but they would be, wouldn’t they?
I like this one. It’s true that sex sells. Our brain stems are very proficient at getting us to look at sexy things and follow them around without us seeming to notice that we’re not getting anything done. But in this case, Lolo is going to earn a lot of scratch for being an sexy athlete who’s never had sex. Sounds good.
