I went back to, I think, the 3rd ever Hubris strip for the police officer. Turns out, I didn’t name him. Feel free to suggest a name for this venerable character who first appeared here in November of 2010.
I’m thinking we call him “Friday”. As in “Happy Friday the 13th.” Which is today, isn’t it?
Lurlene’s younger brother Oswald?
I think by now I’d be done with Lowell also. Remember how much has happened here in a few days for the characters… even for the full day that started with Lowell putting on that shirt and ending with Lowell needing to go get a grip….
“Phil”?
Officer “Happy” Dayz.
Name for the officer? Well, I would never name him. He’s like the guy who everyone kinda knows, but nobody really knows his name.
After eating the last food in the house (Masala on Clif bars), I think Hubris is getting a bit desperate. I mean, expecting Lowell to buy groceries that are more edible than Clif bars minus the masala. Especially after the poison ivy, sandpaper and rubbing alcohol bath debacle. But, hunger drives people to do crazy things.
Officer Friday brings to mind the Joe Friday character from Dragnet. Maybe Nameless is Joe’s third cousin on his wife’s side.
On the other hand, how many characters ARE named after days of the week? And why can’t we have one more?
Tuesday Weld
Wednesday Addams
Joe Friday
Billie Holiday
Mr. Weekly (from a Columbo episode with Larry Storch)
12/13/2013 you refer to him as officer Pettigrew
I thought that was the skateboarding policeman. In my head, they weren’t the same guy, but y’know, they COULD be.
Yes, Pettigrew was the skateboarding officer. They don’t look the same, and Pettigrew is much taller than Hubris.

Pettigrew the skateboarder was a different officer. Definitely.
Friday makes me think of the famous Friday Jones, Robert Heinleins character from the cyberpunk scifi book he named after her. This officer doesn’t much look like her, though.
For him to be Friday the 13th, there would have to be 12 other Fridays.
Oh, you mean like Friday as a last name?
Don’t forget Robinson Crusoe’s man Friday.
Greg, just call him “TGI”.
I’d go with “Officer Krupke” myself.
for putting up with lowel the cop needs a strong name like officer greg kick butt. and sadly lowel is beyond help.
Give him the last name “Constable” or “Officer”.
I know Constables (last name) and think it would be funny … “Hi, I’m constable Constable.”
And that’s Officer Superintendent Constable. Her? She? Talula who does the Hula in Hawaii. Some parents just hate kids.
Talula got her name changed. 🙂
Great news! Now she’s Talula that does not do the Hula in Hawaii.
In 2008 the 9 year old was made a ward of the court in New Zealand so she could have a name change. Parents actually lost custody of her for a bit. She had been telling her friends her name was “K”…. they won’t reveal what her name was changed to but it was something the girl liked apparently. Rest of the related stories from that time indicate there are a lot of people in that area giving kids strange names, and some were outright banned, others were negotiated into something less strange.
Hmm… bring groceries? Ah, Lowell’s revenge? Questions, questions.
