Paste is a minor. He’s under legal age to work except it’s a family owned store (his older stepbrother owns it) so that gets around that. Get past that and try to get to Hubris, for deep pockets; doubt it could get that far even with Mako, White and Hammerhead… (that other attorney company)
Hubris mom has referred to Carlaise (Paste) as Hubris’ stepbrother-if he was half she would mention him as half. I think she married a fellow with a son already and that Paste is only Hubris’ brother by her marriage. Hubris mom is stepmom to Paste too.
If Hubris’ Mom called Paste his Step-Brother, you can chalk it up to any of a number of things- Hubris’ Mom is the kind of woman who named her children ‘Hubris’ and ‘Carlaisle’ and therefore cannot be trusted with words and things. Or Hubris’ Mom can’t be bothered to differentiate one way or the other. Or she doesn’t know the correct terms and doesn’t care. Or, I messed up while writing dialogue, and just did it wrong, or the subject changed from Hubris’ Step-Father to Paste, and I didn’t handle the edit with the usual amazing facility I typically have… or I’m an idiot. You pick.
Okay I hunted. Hubris’ stepdad is named David and is a stockbroker. His mom mentioned keeping Paste out of Hubris’ stepdad’s hair. Strip #3 Hubris refers to Paste as his stepbrother… so David is Paste’s dad, and because Hubris has called Paste stepbrother, not brother or half brother, I assume that Hubris’ mom married David and got Carlaise as her stepson.
But, you can sort it whatever way you feel like Greg, honestly. 🙂 Just don’t eat too many peeps this weekend.

I proclaim that I’m an idiot, and that I didn’t have all this neatly in my head from the start.
It’s possible that I fully intended Paste to be Hubris’ stepbrother in the really early days. It’s also possible that I wrote ‘stepbrother’ because ‘half-brother’ sounds archaic to me or because I wasn’t paying attention.
So here you go- Officious Canon:
Hubris’ Mom married Karl Draussen and they had Hubris.
Hubris’ Mom was widowed under exciting circumstances, and she later married David who is technically Hubris’ Stepdad, and who is the father of Carlaisle. I am officially stating that Hubris’ Mom and David are not stellar parents. More on that later.
Also, Wow. It’s really, really cool that you guys keep track of stuff like this and that FeelinForYa was willing to go back and double check. Well done, and I’ll try to do better because anyone that motivated deserves top-notch work.
Also, I’ll admit that there’s another brother that has been mentioned, but never revealed one way or the other. He’s unpleasant and just boring. I used him in one gag early on, and had plans to include him some more, but then I thought… “Maybe I can just re-write that gag to mention Hubris’ stepdad instead of a brother.” And maybe I will. But then I’ll have to secretly edit this post. You guys might want to get a screen cap of it for blackmail purposes later.
And Whoa! We might have a possible last name for Hubris! Depends on if Hubris was small enough and David adopted him or not. Or if he did and Hubris when reaching legal age changed his name back or to something else. Heh. Heh. Heh.
Now of course some day you have to give us THAT backstory well illustrated some day…
Sh. It’s a secret. But yeah- there’s the big reveal of Hubris’ last name- just for my favorite people that read the comments. I never have found a good excuse to put it in the strip so far. And, KNO3, as for the translation, well, you know me and hiding things in names and such…
