Durnell knows better than to leave a sparkly shiny hat just lying around in a large crowd of people.
Unfortunately, the large crowd of people is filled with normal, everyday lunatics who may or may not know that it’s not okay to run off with a sparkly hat because there’s a Crazyball game starting up.
Anyone wanna come up with a good ‘Crazyball’ chant or song or catchphrase or shout or something? I think we need one of those.
Things are getting weirder. Must be late Saturday afternoon at the ‘Fest.
You know, Mob Rules is almost the opposite of Crazyball- wherein individuals call out rules and everyone obeys.
And yet… Mobs and Crazyball look kinda alike.
The Friendly Judges got the ugly booth. The other booth with the pretty color discs must be at the boat race.
When you’re there to judge, you judge! Why wouldn’t you?
And if the compensation is that you get to make personal judgements on the mental states of people who are behaving very oddly, well, that’s a job perk. That’s what that is.
I figure Crazyball is like Improv Comedy. Somebody yells out a twist, and you say, “Yes.”
Why not? Creativity within specific and rigid rules is okay, but after a certain point, it’s not creativity anymore, it’s just ramped-up skill sets and a career’s worth of practice. Maybe some steroids. But Creativity while running willy-nilly around a crowd of people ostensibly doing the same thing? Maybe the creativity begets some other creativity and so on.
Crazyball, then, is the road to the Next Big Thing. You just have to wade through the Crazy to discover it.
Oh, the loneliness of being the one with the drive and the skills and the muscle to be way out front in a race.
I don’t like loneliness, so that’s why I hang back in races. Way, way back. Like, the last place. It’s friendlier there. Any spectators that are left by the time I pass? Very encouraging things to say. “don’t give up!” and “You can do it!” and “You ain’t dead yet! Keep goin’!” Plus, you’re going slow enough to have a little conversation. That guy way out front? He didn’t have time to hear anything anyone said to him as he went by. It was all just a roaring blur of adulation and thrill.
Bah.
And they’re off. Waaaaay off. I think that the number of bikes that finish the race will be far less than the number that started, don’t you?
Oh, sure, you have to make a fast decision… but it doesn’t have to be the wrong one!
Couldn’t start the boats without starting the bikes! They have to meet up, after all.
I don’t know if all these are gonna make it.
I should have been around more boat races. I’ve paddled as Safety Boat for one here in town a couple of times, and I’ve been to watch the race a couple of times.
Other than the insane scrum at the starting gun? Not interested.
Seriously. It sounds awful, but I just have a lot of difficulty in finding something to thrill me about canoe and kayak races. I’ve done artwork for race teams and for races to use on posters and T-shirts. That was entertaining for the length of time it took to do the work.
So… I guess what I’m saying- is that THIS is the canoe race I wanna see. This is the insane scrum at the starting gun, spread out across a lake. That’d be great. I like that notion, and so I pass it on to you. Enjoy.
