Time. I worry about it during workouts. I mean, they’re only 45 minutes long. An entire thin-crust supreme pizza wouldn’t last 45 minutes in front of me. 45 minutes is only half the length of a decent movie. I can piddle away 45 minutes looking for a word in a puzzle. But put me in a boat with a cramp, or on a bike at the far end of a turnaround ride, or in a car flying down the interstate after I drank a diet mountain dew? 45 minutes is nearly as long as that insane workout I mentioned earlier. Seriously. Do 20 pushups. That should eat up at least six minutes, don’t you think? I gotta start working out with people older than me. They have a better sense of time.

Where do you want to be in a crowd? Are you the Alpha, in the middle of the main conversation? The Beta, supporting several other players in the game? The Joker, propping up other egos with your own? The Wallflower, standing off to one side waiting for your moment? Cinderella, coming alive when the chance presents itself?
Or maybe you’re like Peter Wang, and you’re a raging Narcissist. I figure he assumes that anyone who appears not to be paying attention to him is just pretending because they’re extra jealous and can’t stand themselves for it.
Sorry to keep you guys from the Crazyball game, but you know that David and Wilma had to chat about where Paste is going next (Other than across the lake in a canoe full of raccoons. Come to think of it, why would any other destination matter? We should have gone straight to the raccoon canoe bit.)
I won’t hide from anyone that I don’t enjoy riding bicycles on city streets. It’s too stressful for me to enjoy.
Dirt trails with venomous reptiles and the chance to become lost or injured far from help? Never has worried me too much.
Riding in streets filled with drivers any one or more of which could possibly be distracted in any number of ways? Or murderously angry? Or half-wittedly malicious? Or off-handedly mean spirited? Or thoughtlessly daydreaming? That’s not even much of a gamble. In some cities, that ride’s a death wish.
But drawing a bunch of bicycles in a city? Pretty amusing, even if coloring it takes an extra minute or seventy.
You want to work out, beforehand, who knows what about canoes and racing.
If you ask “you know your way around a canoe race, right?” and the person you’re facing says, “Yes, my brother and I raced frequently in Summer Camp. It was great”, then you have some information.
But you don’t have all the information you need. Perhaps the questions “Did you ever win a race?”, or “How young were you at the time?” or “Why is your life jacket on backward and inside out?” should have been asked, just for clarification.
Everyone seems to be enjoying his or her time at the Outdoorfest! Including the various and sundry folks charged with security and safety.
It’s probably like theme park workers going back into the park on their days off- you’re just using work time to get comfortable and scout opportunities, right?
Someday, I reckon, there’ll be a Nutley in the Olympics.
Not one of these, probably, but maybe a grandkid of the littlest Nutley. A proud Nutley, who got a bike as a child… because he or she WANTED it!
‘Member in that Avengers movie? Tony Stark says, “I HAVE a Plan of Attack. Attack!”
That’s Big Ron’s plan to win the boat race.
“Paddle ’til you win.”
It’s very sound logic. Or maybe it just very much sounds like it might be logic.
It’s important to practice new skills.
But you gotta pick your time and place with care, just in case someone with a good reach and a long paddle is in striking distance.
