Outdoorfest shirts

Okay, so there’s a little icon on the left hand side of the site that says ‘Outdoor Galore Store’.  I usually don’t make much of it here because there are about a dozen designs I’d like to load up , and I always think I’ll take a day to prepare them and then send everyone scurrying over there to take a look.

But I usually get bogged down elsewhere.

Until I got off my butt long enough to ask a buddy of mine to work his magic on a Big Stanky Creek Outdoorfest shirt design.  He does stuff for The Boy Scouts, and Drake Waterfowl, and Dagger kayaks, and you get the idea- he does amazing work.  Big hand, everyone, for Mr. Mike Womack! (click HERE and see more of his work.  Need a fine  logo or T-shirt design, anyone?)

So now, if you want to tell everyone that you were a competitor at the Outdoorfest, I’ll back you up.  You just need the shirt, and you need to tell a good story about how you wrecked a wagon in the ReadyFlyer Downhill, and crashed into a big fat guy and nearly broke a… whatever bone you like.  Your choice.

The back of the shirt is filled with sponsors’ logos- inside gags for those who read the strip, really.

So there you go.  Shirts in the store!

I’ll try to have the rest of the new designs soon.  I promise.  Really.

Kayak lessons! I think.

Okay, I don’t clean my studio very often.

But when I do, I find neat things. You know those neat things you find and think, “Oh, I thought this was lost forever.  I’m glad I found that.”  Those are neat, but there are neater things.

The neatest things are the one I don’t remember.

I don’t remember this.

Apparently, I was going to do a tutorial of some kind about kayaking- specifically about rolling a kayak. I don’t remember why I thought I would do that- whether it was to see if a book idea was viable, or if it was going to be an online thing… maybe it was to show the syndicates what else Hubris was good for.

Anyhow, here’s your Hubris Extra for Thursday… a scattering of lesson bits about kayaking!

So, for those of you wandering by the site here because you picked up a sticker or sat through my panel on webcomicking, thanks for putting your URL or contact info on the sheet that was passed around. Click HERE if you would like to check out the first fruits of that.  That’ll carry you to Manga Magazine, where Nathan Long requests you go looking for The Epic Adventure of Two-Sticks, Chibi N’ Love, and My Girl.

I’m offering the link as a service to those folks kind enough to come to the webcomics panel.  You’re on your own if you go looking- some of the cartoons that’ll be there might not be safe for younger viewers. Or at work.  Or for people who don’t like Manga.  There’s your warning.

One intriguing thing I see about Manga Magazine right off the bat is that at the top of their page, it says, “Submit your work!”  Hmm.  If you have some Manga work to submit, you need to do some research as to whether they’re a good fit for you.  This may be just the thing you’ve been looking for if you do your own manga comic.

There’s your lesson for the day.  Decide what kind of work you do.  Look for opportunities.  Network.  Research opportunities and make informed decisions about whether any move you make is to your advantage.  Do things that are to your advantage.  Ignore things that are not.

Hint -(and this has nothing to do with Manga Magazine one way or the other, this is general advice)- sometimes, opportunities are to your benefit.  Sometimes opportunities are to the benefit of those who offer the opportunity.  There’s a spectrum of possibilities between these two ends.  If a site or a publication offers to publish your material without paying you for it- are you getting any real benefit from that, or is the publisher simply getting free content?  They MUST have new content to keep publishing. Is it your job to supply it to them?  What benefit is it to you if they cannot continue publishing?  On the other hand, do they do something on their site to drive traffic and readers to YOUR site?  Do they pay you for your work in some other way?

Or is it just enough of a kick to see your work on someone’s site for you to spend a lot of time providing them free content?

Anything you decide is fine, just make sure you decided it, and it fits your plan.

Anime Cosplay

So I’m doing a panel on webcomics at AnimeBluesCon.  And I take a few photos of the people going around the con.

If you’re in the area and you want to see more girls with short skirts, long swords and hair the color of… well, any color you like from mango to ice… you should be there.  It’s at the Hilton in Memphis. There are also people in long jackets, jagged wigs, and fur.  Lots and lots of fur.  There’s a rumor about how much fur, and what happens to it late Saturday at this Con.  Anyone brave enough to go to THAT, let us know what the heck happened.  Sounded lurid to me.

On Sunday at noon (6-23-13) I’ll be doing the webcomics panel again.

If you want to look closer at the photos here, you can click, and click again.  Eventually, you can see something a little larger.
