In the Hubris board game that I’ve started (and can’t find time to work on again lately), it’s entirely possible to use the strategy mentioned above.
You assign a second team member to gum up the works for the other teams, leaving your primary competitor with a better chance.
I learned that from those big bike races.
Well, that and ‘Talladega Nights’.
Oh, man. It’s another one of those serious cartoons that advances the plot.
Ewwww. Now, we’ll have to have a nematode race to shake off the mood.
So… this is becoming the longest Friday ever! By my reckoning, it’s been going on since July of last year.
That’s a longer Friday than that one in college when you went to that Thursday night thing and had to take those tests all hung over and then you had dinner with your parents and your aunt, and had to act all cheerful, then you had homework and a shift at work… Woo, that was a long Friday, but nothing like the first day of an OutdoorFest, by golly!
I just know that someday, Chick-Fil-A’s board of directors will be so far removed from the originator’s intent that they won’t be able to understand that not being able to get their sandwiches on Sunday actually makes them more desirable every…other…day.
And on that day, they will open on Sundays, and their inevitable slide into oblivion will begin.
And the board of directors will all still get their bonuses.
Writing motivation in characters is tricky.
Just knowing what their motivations are, and writing around them is less tricky.
2 dimensional characters without motivation are easiest of all, but they don’t last. The second and third time you draw them into the story, they start to have little lives you didn’t expect.
Here’s another one of those cartoons where the original pen and ink isn’t much to look at. The figures in the first two panels are there, and the lettering and balloon in the last panel. It’s better after the Photoshopping. It’s mostly due to the clouds. Nice clouds.
On another note, the action here is pure superhero. There’s an awful lot of superhero-ing that goes on these days in our entertainment channels, and not all in superhero movies (though there’s an awful lot of superhero-ing going on in those) No, I’m talking about how in almost any action and drama these days, the hero has some ability to run without gasping or think without effort or jump off of roofs without shattering four bones and two semi-major organs… or twist and ankle that hurts for more than, say, 12 seconds. It wouldn’t surprise anyone who’s watching the final season of Game Of Thrones right now if The Mountain or his brother could juggle a Caber like ol’ Ziggy here.
Superhero.
When we were kids, my brother and I fought. Rarely fisticuffs. It was usually just mouthing off at each other.
I learned, at one point, if I just kept standing there talking and not letting him get a word in edgewise, I could irritate him to the point where he just left in a huff.
To my mind, that was winning. As I got older, I realized that it was me being a jerk.
These days, it sounds like what passes for ‘news commentary’ on some of the livelier TV shows. And they probably feel that they’re winning.
Kara will see now, that because of her delegating the responsibility of the Caber Toss to Donny, she wins.
It’s not necessarily true, but she will see it now.
I like today’s cartoon.
Personally, I enjoy writing cartoons where people contradict their own judgement calls.
Which means I probably do it all the time without noticing.

Anyhow…
Kara’s competitive, not stupid. She doesn’t WANT anyone else competing in ‘her’ place, but when you can be moved around like a potted plant, you might have to take the hint at some point.
On the other hand, she wasn’t going to turn in a Mal performance on the caber anyhow. She’s a little stronger than Mal, and deep, deep down… a lot meaner. That makes a difference.
And I say that in a good way.
