Advertising stuff.
You can tell when it’s done by a committee, because it’s dull and pointless. And you can tell when they let one guy in the company just knock it out himself, because it’s always so badly misconceived that you know that next time, committee will insist that it’s dull and pointless.
Also, I need to apologize for yesterday’s cartoon. Didn’t mean to offend anyone, but it’s been pointed out to me that injury awards and comments about PTSD are inappropriate. You have my apologies. The only thing I can say in my defense is that no one, in fact, was harmed in the making of this comic strip. Daneil Hawshank, Michael Liu, Mr. Hieland, and the rest don’t actually exist. I do thank all of you very, very much for playing along with me and my imaginary people.
Also also… I hope that I didn’t compound the problem and upset anyone with today’s comic, but it was already done when I got the message about yesterday’s.
Those T-shirts that Mr. Smythe-Cholera had made? Those don’t exist either. Not to break the fourth wall all to heck for you or anything, but… y’know. Now I’m second-guessing myself.

I was on the activities committee one year where I worked and we decided to have a teeshirt design contest then have them printed after collecting orders. (rest of story is too long).
What sounded like a good idea at the time often doesn’t fly when it hits the real world… Thank you for the apology, Greg. Keep drawing. 🙂
Instead of ‘often doesn’t fly’ I should have said ‘sometimes doesn’t fly’. Again, thank you Greg, and keep drawing. I’m in suspense at what’s happening at the shop…
I am colored (and get MORE colored in the summer) and I’m not put off by this. The punchline is that someone said “&*#@ NO!” in response. I laughed at that.
I don’t think it’s that offensive but if hubris gets in a news paper you should probably redraw this one and the last one.also it’s sort of political which makes it boring and less original then the strips when it’s just them at the skate park or hosting the outdoorsfest
It wasn’t offensive, it isn’t offensive, and it won’t be offensive.
The only reason to apologize is when you’ve actually done something wrong. And, Greg, you haven’t done anything wrong yet (except for apologizing when you don’t need to.)
Second this. If you can’t laugh at it, then what can you do?
I have PTSD and make fun of it all the time. My husband and I often joke about my ‘crazy’. Makes it easier to have a bit of brevity… it’s a bloody horrible thing to live with.
Well, as they say down at the philosophy store, Real is Relative.
Or, from Mr. Gump, Real is as Real Does.
Or, from Townes Van Zandt, We all got holes to fill / Them holes are all that’s real.
As a writer+cartoonist, your talent is in making holes seem real.
You are not bad at that.
Thanks! That’s the kind of compliment that my ego waits around for, down there in the cellar of my soul. If I can make you believe that Hubris and those around him are out there living their lives every day, I’ve done the job that means the most to me.
When I read the T shirt it sounded like Samuel Jackson’s voice in a credit card commercial.
….so they made no big deal out of raccoons with guns but went for the PTSD….I’ll never understand people…….it’s a comic…..lighten up!! For the record I’m never offended!! Most of this just makes me laugh hysterically.
And then there is Bob…Sigh…
Greg, we know you were in the place between your ears, and we know these people live only in yours, and our, imaginations. We know you did nothing intentional with this or the last strip. A few RL people have wandered past and flowed through your pen or mouse onto the page or screen, but. Most everyone in Hubris-land lives only because you and us think about them and you have the skill to also bring them to life through your art and share. Keep it up, dude. We gotta have our Hubris. I do agree that maybe you tweak these last two a teensy for the masses if they hit the printed page but. Keep drawing. 🙂
Yep. Definitely doing a little re-write on the Awards strip. Should have done it before- now that I’ve thought about it (thanks, everyone, for making me THINK about it.) it wasn’t pushed deeply enough into the realm of silliness. But it will be.
YAY, more Hubie Silliness! Alright!
It’s still fun to read and they say that if you’re not offending anyone you’re doing something wrong. Just make sure you keep it to the people who don’t normally read this strip and you’ll be fine.
Well, now I want to go online and make up a batch of these shirts.
