You know those times when you have enough expertise to hear a phrase that just doesn’t connect correctly? I think “I need to get a pair of skis real quick” is one of those. Skiers would hear that and think… that’s not enough information. There’s something wrong there. I’m not saying that I’m the one with enough expertise to hear the words and spot that they don’t jibe. I’m saying that I’ve been the completely uninformed dunce often enough to hear that sound in other people’s voices.
Just like the time Hubris sold Mitt Leif the mountain bike pack that included a rack, a few stickers to stick on gear, a helmet, and a jersey with a dirty tire stripe across it. Package so he could look like he did.
Three lift tickets? Hm, I suppose Hubris gets enough of those, he found out they were sellable commodities; as ‘decorations’ or… someone brought their gear back in after a weekend and wiping out, and sold it back used. More than likely the latter….
“My friends are going rock climbing. I need some rope and shoes real quick.”
The back story on that setup sounds interesting.
Sure sounded fishy right away
Like “there is that girl or my boss I want to impress please sell me skis stat. Am running out of time.” kind of way
Had some like that at the shop back then and wee were Japan import, so go figure
It’s good to intimidate newbies in any sport. It makes you feel superior and makes them wish they never tried. Win, win.
Hmm. If that’s the way you read that cartoon, I’ll take the blame for not writing carefully enough. Sorry about that. I’ll try to make it clearer next time.
…Also, I hope Ben came back to read the next strip, which sort of covered his issue a little.
I always come back. This is my favorite online comic. I get that that wasn’t your intent, but it came across that way to me. Because I have been on the receiving end several times, trying to learn to fly fish, buying an over the road bike, etc.
Yep. I’ve been there, too. Seeing the disappointment on friends’ faces as they tried to teach me golf. And tennis. And softball. I will admit, though, that was a hell of a lot of Mike Ramirez’s golf balls I put in that lake.
The kind of gleeful malice of which I think you speak — not only taking advantage of someone’s ignorance but also mocking them — is exemplified in this sketch:

Greg, you wrote it just fine.
Wow Ben.. You REALLY don’t get it.. Do you??
For a moment I thought that was Hunter Winston! Glad it isn’t; though there are and have been characters in ‘Hubris’ that annoy me, HW may be the only one that I’ve truly despised. (Coming to think of it, his mother might make that two.) Just the sight of his face, exuding entitlement, made me itch to slap the #%$ out of it. That he acted as if he Knew It All and Done It All with respect to outdoor activities while actually being clueless made him that much more obnoxious.
While the customer doesn’t seem to have much of a clue either (about skiing, anyway), he does strike me as a good-natured sort. Which makes it a pity that he resembles that little p***k HW!
