Doing what I do, I get email updates and news articles and all about copyright abuses on the web.
There are long tirades I can go on about how people and companies (Companies are not “persons” no matter what the tax laws say. People are people) use material off the internet.
But I won’t. You’re welcome.
Also, by the way, Happy 11th Anniversary here at Hubriscomics.com!
Happy anniversary, Hubris!!
Speaking of copyrights, dare I mention my desperate need for a Hubris calendar for 2022? 🙂
Oooh! Me too! The kind you can hang on the wall and write notes in each square? I would absolutely buy that.
Oh and Happy Anniversary, Hubris!
Last year, I poked around and didn’t find a good outlet for having those made. Also, after getting drawings picked out for the 12 images, I ran out of time to get them set up… Maybe now I can get caught up on other stuff and make us a calendar. Cross your fingers!
I would honestly be satisfied with a file with 12 pictures and a calendar format that I could print out each month. I’d prefer the actual calendar, of course, but I’m willing to do my own printing and to pay you for the privilege.
Yeah, a company that makes millions blames “an intern” after a complaint, and goes right on stealing content afterward..
Happy anniversary, Greg! Can I sell you a cartoon calendar I whipped up about a guy running an outdoor store? Got the artwork off the internet, so you know it’s mine now!
This one made me sad.
Always give credit.
Yeah that does not cut it in most cases really.
If you fail to get permission, credit does not matter particularly if you use it for something other than the intended use.
Parodies are one thing but most people do not really know how to alter enough to make it justifiable or they are to lazy. And if you are out to make a profit you can afford to pay another artist.
Jeeze louise, have I been reading about the Fest for 11 years?
Seems like just 2.
Yeah, just steal from a cartoonist trying to turn a profit.
Exactly. I mean, they’re all rich, and they just draw funny pictures for a living.
Speaking of which, if anyone can figure out how to get those Russian guys from ‘syndicating’ my Buckets cartoons without permission, I’d like to hear it.
In 2010(?) I helped deal with some people who had stolen a friend’s art. They were holding a gallery showing and had the exhibitionist’s contact info and real name on the advertisements. So, in response to my friends complaint, I emailed letters to every gallery, art supply retailer and wholesaler, and every print shop within 200 miles. I also contacted The Bundeslander and both the German and US embassies in writing and email. I had the letters translated by a professor I knew at the community college.
The gallery showing was canceled the next day and I never heard about it again except as a thank you from my friend but I assume Stuff Happened. It all took about four hours.
A friend here who is a political cartoonist has a Halloween cartoon taking a jab at one political party. Someone edited the text in to to poke at the opposite political party and not only posts it on social media every year, but somehow got a major newspaper to publish it. Oh, yeah, and he wasn’t happy about it. As a cartoonist yourself, you know the problems with people cutting off the copyright notice on cartoons and posting them, plus using them for profit.
I juggle this all the time being a pixel jockey for hire. A common one here is people who don’t want to pay for their wedding pictures and want me to erase watermarks off their digital proofs, i can do it but i quote such a high price that it is massively cheaper to just go pay the photographer. Another, was going to have an article published in a large circulation trade magazine. and sent me a stack of photos to prep. EXIF and copyright tags printed on the pictures, watermarks-they owned none of the images. i brought it up, told No it’s all good, asked for the releases/permission granted. None. i offered to make the inquiries for the releases, they got really mad and told me to fix the pictures. i contacted who they worked for over the breach in ethics. article never showed and i was informed that the issue had been taken care of. artwork is so blatantly ripped off all the time.
