As a side note, I am now the distracted owner of ’50 years of Mad Magazine’. I just read the first two issues. The story lines aren’t much, but the art is fantastic! Each panel is crammed with ‘easter eggs’, details not related to the story, but worth close examination. The 50s were, in my opinion, the perfect decade for comics.
I own #114 and I’ve seen reprints from some of earlier issues. Mad Magazine was because Bill Gaines was getting flack from the regulatory board that dealt with comic books, so he made it a ‘Magazine’ to be able to get away with things… envy you your collection! In the 70’s and 80’s the satirizing of their movies, I got so used to the ‘style’ that I would grab a copy and peruse the satire to decide if I wanted to see the movie! Better than any other review!
Another good comic is breaking cat news. http://www.gocomics.com/breaking-cat-news
