As I said yesterday in GoComics, if TSOJ had cropped the photo, so the building that looks like The Pope’s Hat wasn’t in it, I would have had a harder time figuring it out.
Of course, Google helped me a bit. 😀
Man, you guys never fail to amaze me. Not only to identify the location of a photo, but to work out where it was taken FROM. Good grief, but that’s more skill than I can imagine having.
It’s not actually that hard. It just takes landmarks, logic, time and a general idea of where to look in the first place.
The last was the city. Was given that.
The volcano and that water break in the background gave me a general area in the city to start looking. Then you look at the water break the “pope hat” building and the hotel pool for a general line.
Then you site more central buildings in the picture for a more exact line. I used the blue roofed building to the right of the “pope hat” and the tall tan one closer.
As for distance you note the angle of the buildings in the foreground. That hotel roof pool can’t be too far. Plus the ridge gets in the way of seeing it from farther away.
The spot I picked was the only real un-treed section of the ridge facing east along my line.
And so you have a photo location. Works best with recognizable landmarks. This was actually pretty easy. It only took me about 1-1.5 hours.
Kagoshima, Japan

Well done! So now, you know who sent the photo, right?
I would think it was 3 Steps over Japan…
I would think you are exactly right.

Given the city and the alignment of the buildings in the picture I’d say the picture was taken somewhere close to here

Fun to do though.
