Rick has his victory. In his head, he was probably thinking of awards, or cheering, or handshakes, or something that says, “You Won!”
It probably did not occur to him that anyone would walk up and have this conversation with him. He’s probably wondering now if anyone actually HAS done so, or if maybe he’s hallucinating.
That Mal. He got so caught up in winning.
That Lowell. I’m wondering if he didn’t throw the match when he saw that Mal was buying the one-sided bet.
… It’s not Lowell’s hundred, anyhow.
Paste isn’t the sort of person to make a goofy bet. He’s more the ‘tails I win, heads you lose’ kind of gambler. And what sort of maniac makes the lunatic bet himself when there’s a patsy around to send in for you?
Also, Mal thinks the big end of the stick is just for counterbalance. You have earned my admiration if you realized that’s what was going on.
So, the rules piled on rules piled on rules eventually land Crazy-Ball in a place where the game goes into a sort of singularity.
Honestly, I can’t imagine another way for it to end. Eventually, things would get so tangled that Entropy would choose the winner.
Except, of course, if you’re clever and motivated enough to play Crazy-Ball, entropy has a hard time dealing with you in the first (or last) place.
You can’t win, you know. Your instincts and your forebrain and real life aren’t on the same page. They’re not even reading from the same book, no matter what anyone tries to tell you.

You know how boys tend to do stupid stuff “to impress girls”? And everyone stands around going “Why’s that idiot riding his bike with no hands, standing up on the handlebars?” and “Why’s that kid mouthing off to his buddies about his sports abilities and injuries?” and “Doesn’t he realize that girls aren’t impressed by that macho crap?”
Well, they’re right. It doesn’t make sense that guys do dumb things in front of girls to impress them.
That’s not what they’re doing.
They’re doing stuff to intimidate and drive off the other males, thus having more opportunity with the females for themselves. Pure biology, but we insist on seeing it the wrong way ’round.
We need a Jane Goodall primatologist for people. Someone to sit around the mall and say, “The loud male I call ‘Zippy’ in the red shirt is posturing in front of his friends and bullying elderly humans in hopes of mating with the blonde cheerleader I have named “Ditzy”. I will follow their progress closely.”
That’s right. Winning isn’t everything… No, wait. You said winning isn’t… Ah. Well, at least that paycheck makes it all worthwhile. Right? Right? Hello?
