Don’t you love camping next to somebody who, for any number of reasons, can’t quite realize that A COUPLE OF MICRONS OF NYLON WON’T STOP A HUMAN VOICE. AT… ALLLLLL. Cub scouts, snorers, first time campers, drunks, people hopelessly distracted by leg cramps… all of ya- SHADDUP! We’re tryin’ to sleep about fourteen inches away from you on the other side of two tent walls thinner than a pair of fancy underwear. And if I gotta pick between your conversation and the amount of sleep I’m getting on the cold, hard ground, I’ll take the sleep, meager as it is.

Hubris- Moron TV

So here we are with the original Basic Premise for Hubris. The name of the comic strip and the TV show Hubris hosted was to be ‘Because It’s There’. “Because It’s There” was the famous answer George Lee Mallory gave when asked why the heck he wanted to climb Mount Everest. I thought it was a pretty good excuse to do most anything outdoors. A nice syndicate editor told me to quit fooling around and use the name ‘Hubris’ instead. And who am I to ignore a good editor?

All through the original strips, Hubris’ name was painfully obvious. He was big and blustery and Doug The Dog (or Earl, in a lot of the first strips. Patrick McDowell’s ‘Mutts’ put a stop to me calling the dog ‘Earl’, because who wants to be accused of not being bright enough to avoid naming one of your characters the same as those in hotshot award-winning strips) had to pull his fat out of the fire on lots of occasions. As I wrote more and more strips and added more characters, Hubris’ character smoothed out to something more relatable. Still big and blustery, but not quite so blithely oblivious to his own shortcomings.

Poor ol’ Burl. The camping world is all nylon and ripstop now, and the rest of his boy scout troop isn’t there to help him drag those heavy tents.

Hubris- And a tiny, tiny campfire

When I wrote this cartoon, I didn’t think that anyone manufactured an actual ferret tent. One quick trip to Youtube.com lets me know that 1) Somewhere, every product that CAN exist DOES exist, and 2) Everything in the world is now on Youtube.com.

I’m due for a new tent. My old Kelty domolite is old enough to receive social security and is falling apart worse than my knees. My new tent, only a few years old, is a Coleman- the sort of thing you get when it’s going to be filled with cub scouts for a few years. It’s held up beautifully- including a trip to Yellowstone and Moab, but those poor bungie rods are showing their age early. I’m looking at this one and thinking it’s awful pretty. Canoe Club Cartoons

I used to belong to the Bluff City Canoe Club. Nice people. I was more of a kayaker, though, so I went off with kayakers. While I was a member, though, I did some cartoons for their newsletter. This is pretty standard when you’re a cartoonist. You join a group, you put your time and attention into the group, and eventually you use your one skill to add something to the group. And to show them that you’re NOT just a poor paddler, but a fine, fine cartoonist. Anyhow, here’s a twofer today! The first cartoon was a random, “Here, you can use this in the newsletter if you want. I’m thinking of drawing up a bunch of these and sending them to outdoors magazines.” The second was a sort of ‘Odd Couple with Boats’ theme that came up. I don’t know if there were ever any more than three or four of them drawn up.
