Durnell knows better than to leave a sparkly shiny hat just lying around in a large crowd of people.
Unfortunately, the large crowd of people is filled with normal, everyday lunatics who may or may not know that it’s not okay to run off with a sparkly hat because there’s a Crazyball game starting up.
Anyone wanna come up with a good ‘Crazyball’ chant or song or catchphrase or shout or something? I think we need one of those.
Normally, over at the Patreon page, I talk about the behind-the-scenes stuff about coloring and schedule and tool quirks or whatever, and the commentary I put in here is usually from ‘inside’ the cartoon.
But not today. Today, I thought I’d mention that I went looking for the last Sue P. cartoon, so I could cadge all the colors off it. That’s what I usually do- open an older cartoon and copy the colors from it so that things stay at least a LITTLE consistent from one appearance of a character to the next.
Today I grabbed one from a couple of weeks ago or so for Durnell, Mark Troll (feel free to ‘out’ my appropriation of Mark Trail if any of you guys go over there to read that strip. The commenters there are an angry bunch and they’d probably like the opportunity to see Mark done bad over here.) and Clem Twang (and their judges booth, which I drew from memory and made a mistake on, dang it. When I finally do the ‘Complete Hubris’ book, I’m gonna have weeks of tweaks to make) And then I scrolled back through my files to find Sue P. Turns out, last time she rode through was nearly a year ago. Eleven months or so? Except in Cartoon Time. Then it was, like twenty minutes or less.
Personality comes into judging, doesn’t it? I mean, if we all saw things the same way and felt the same way about what we saw, there’d hardly be a reason for judges.
But if we feel our judgements aren’t being respected, well, we feel WE aren’t being respected. And, as we all know that if everyone just felt and behaved the we ourselves behaved, there would be no war and no poverty- if we ourselves aren’t being respected, those who don’t respect us are enemies of peace and plenty. Anarchists and Huns, obviously.
There’s no actual reason that the judges for an event have to like one another, is there? No, so long as they’re impartial. That’s the important thing. They can’t have anything for or against the competitors.
Even if they’re kicking the other judges shins under the table.
I wonder about the body language of Vaudeville acts. I bet there were subtleties that didn’t play well in larger venues. There were probably little cues and tells that the performers themselves were hardly able to control, seen only by those in the front rows who were willing to watch for them.
Having said that, who spotted Clem Twang (who I’m more willing to call “Mark” when he’s in conjunction with this other Mark character) easing up closer to Mark Troll in the last panel?
What would you have said to DeMarco, if he asked this li’l favor and then left for Popeye’s for a chicken sandwich?
Or…
What if he went to Appleby’s?
