So I’ve reported to you that I visited St. Simon’s Island GA, and taught a couple of classes and all. Did I tell you that I got to visit with Jack Davis and his family just a little bit?

They’re gracious and wonderful people. His wife is a wonderful lady. They’re terrific hosts, and their children and grandchildren are finer folks than you usually get to meet.

…And I totally peeked in Mr. Davis’ studio and took a shot of his Reuben Award (see if you can spot it in the photo) and his drawing table.

And if you don’t already really know who Jack Davis is, or don’t appreciate all the amazing work he’s done for all these decades, well, I think you need to Google or Bing or whatever your favorite search engine is and check it out. Chances are you’ll hit a few magazine covers or MAD magazine/comic illustrations, or movie posters, or book covers, or something that’ll make you say, “Hey! I remember seeing that!” Or, “I had a copy of that” or some similar thing.

So, I was on St.Simon’s Island, GA. It’s a very nice place. And there, in the middle of a great vacation spot, is GlynnArt.

They’re currently hosting a show of Jack Davis art. If you don’t know his name, don’t worry. I can explain to you who he is very easily.

He was there for the old EC ‘Tales From The Crypt’ comics, and when Mad comics (for whom he drew their SECOND cover) became MAD magazine, Jack stayed with ’em. He also drew uncounted covers for Time, and Reader’s Digest, and more titles than you want to have listed. Amazing man with an amazing career- which isn’t over yet, I should add. He’s still knocking out work.

Egomaniac that I am, when asked if I could participate in the opening weekend of the show, I jumped at it. I taught two classes (originally I stepped in as a replacement teacher of the Inking With A Brush class for adults, when a few weeks before the opening, the space was vacated) Then, friend John Read had to skip out and spend some time at a hospital bedside, I became the childrens’ Cartooning 101 teacher.

Here’s a photo of the famous and wonderful Jack Davis- star of Mad Magazine and more books and ads and posters and comic books and stuff than you can conceive that one person did in a single lifetime. He’s my hero. That’s why I leapt into the photo as it was being taken and then ‘appropriated’ the camera’s memory card so the shot couldn’t be erased as being useless. Look! It looks like Mr. Jack and I actually met and talked and stuff!

This was taken at the National Cartoonist Society’s Southeast Chapter Fall Meeting (or maybe at a Reuben Division Judging weekend) at the University of Georgia- timed to coincide with the Jack Davis Award being given to Sergio Aragones. It was really, really awesome.
