Kara has a point. You gotta have a Lake Superior or something if you want current. Or tides. Or rafts that have come untied and are coming after you.
Buck’s Pass Lake is NOT that kind of lake. Usually. That’s what I heard.
You can hear it, too, but you have to hang out with drunks who are fishing and have been out all day … and came back to shore only ’cause the cooler “Got empty.”
Big Ron knows how to plan ahead. You know he’s the guy that always has the right bait for what’s biting, he has the tools to fix anything that might slow or stop the boat. Got a sharp pocket knife for getting that hook out the meat of your hand. Got one of those koosey things for putting his cup, can, or bottle into to keep it colder longer.
…and he’s got kegs for flotation when there’s gonna be a chance of the boat going to the bottom of the lake. A case of bottles isn’t going to do you any good when you need a ride back to shore in the direst of straits.
You gotta think of these things. Like Big Ron does.
You guys remember Mr. Mud Pie, right? He was waaaaay out in front during the first of the race, and by golly, it looks like he stayed there.
I think Mrs. Mud Pie was expecting to hear something more entertaining than, “I was so good that no bad stuff could catch up.” Maybe she enjoys the excitement of a little cannon fire now and again.
Time. I worry about it during workouts. I mean, they’re only 45 minutes long. An entire thin-crust supreme pizza wouldn’t last 45 minutes in front of me. 45 minutes is only half the length of a decent movie. I can piddle away 45 minutes looking for a word in a puzzle. But put me in a boat with a cramp, or on a bike at the far end of a turnaround ride, or in a car flying down the interstate after I drank a diet mountain dew? 45 minutes is nearly as long as that insane workout I mentioned earlier. Seriously. Do 20 pushups. That should eat up at least six minutes, don’t you think? I gotta start working out with people older than me. They have a better sense of time.
I’ve never been much of one for team sports. Kayaking, disc golf, mountain biking, unicycling, skateboarding… there’s not a lot of shared responsibility for the Win, in the sports I like.
Mostly, though, there’s not a lot of opportunity to let down your teammates in the sports I like. Hell, there’s hardly any competition in the sports I like.
I was never one for speed while mountain biking, or gymnastics while skating, or floodwater sluices and hair runs in a kayak, either.
I’m like Hubris, which makes sense. Sports don’t have to be organized or coordinated or even serious.
Uh-oh. I just realized… I just like to play outside. Whether or not there’s a sport involved doesn’t actually interest me.
Remember a few years or a few minutes ago, depending on whose time you think comic strips happen in, when Hubris sat down to make the events weird? And Paste wandered in to make some suggestions that were pretty nuts, too?
Yeah, me neither.
The other kind of Fu has more leeway for jumping and twisting and flipping and punching. Definitely more leeway for kicking.
Kayak Fu is trickier to do.
I’ll let you know when I’ve got the really good Kayak Fu moves worked out.
Okay, I don’t clean my studio very often.
But when I do, I find neat things. You know those neat things you find and think, “Oh, I thought this was lost forever. I’m glad I found that.” Those are neat, but there are neater things.
The neatest things are the one I don’t remember.

Apparently, I was going to do a tutorial of some kind about kayaking- specifically about rolling a kayak. I don’t remember why I thought I would do that- whether it was to see if a book idea was viable, or if it was going to be an online thing… maybe it was to show the syndicates what else Hubris was good for.
Anyhow, here’s your Hubris Extra for Thursday… a scattering of lesson bits about kayaking!
