Well, I had hoped that Hubris would be going to Burning Man this year, but in the first round of ticket sales, I missed out. ย There’s still a couple of chances to get tickets, so not all hope is lost, but it’s not looking good, is it?
Whattaya think? ย Would you have enjoyed a Hubris-Goes-To-Burning-Man story arc?
Not enough fire extinguishers… heh. Save Hubris-BurningMan-arc for next year. After the Winter Outdoorsfest! OOHRAH!
As for Hubris and the skylight, WISE Move. GOOD Choice. YEAH!
BTW, thanks for an EXTRA Strip, Greg!
Hubris COULD build a burning man in the middle of the store from used Clif bar wrappers and swizzle sticks, and then bungie jump over it from the new skylight…
But, yeah, burning, man!
And repelling. And net ropes. And hanging displays. And grilling during winter. And hanging targets for paintball. And rock climbing walls.
Yes, to a burning Man, Hubris must go!
Burning man! Burning man!
I would HATE being Hubris’ insurance agent…”you want to put a bungee jump where?…”
As for Burning Man, yup I could see them fitting in just fine there. BTW, have you ever established in the strip where Hubris lives? I’m guessing California, but like I said, I’m guessing.
Well it’s been summer there for this long, he could be in many places. We really haven’t seen palm trees or any other stuff to indicate….
Though Stanky Creek is off in central-east US by the soundings of it, its in like south Indiana where Greg lives… ๐ (and yes you can grow some palms outside year round in like 4b so that is south Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois could grow some)
hahahaha … THAT is a good story today. LOVE IT!! ๐
I’ve never said where Hubris lives- the weather and adventure scenarios bow to whatever I need, funny-wise. It’s sort of traditional to either make the place someone lives ‘a character to itself’ or ignore it completely. I’ve written Buckets cartoons where a character complains that, if they lived in Australia, it’d be SUMMER right now!” or something like that. I felt bad. The gag fit the need for the story arc, but The Buckets runs in a paper in Australia, where they must always put up with U.S. comic strips showing the wrong darn season. Other strips, like ‘The Yellow Kid’ and ‘Li’l Abner’ had definite places the characters lived and were critical to the gags and stories. Hubris only needs the occasional mountain or river, and I’m happy to oblige him.
That settles it then. Hubris lives in Greg’s head, escapes out Greg’s fingers and the pencils, pens, and computer he uses… so Hubris is wherever Greg is and wherever Greg imagines him to be. ๐
Oh yeah. Who’s going to believe something that far-fetched? Might as well just say that Greg makes stuff up.
Never going to happen.
Greg once said to me (or did I say to him?) during a phone call “Everything I say is a lie” … so maybe it’s NOT that far fetched TSOJ … you never know mon amie, you never know. ๐
defintilay with lowel tagging along trying to be hubris best friend along with paste and bob getting into some mishief there.
Neat background effect. New style for the strip, or just experimenting?
Just horsing around. I occasionally use photo backgrounds, but this time I threw a couple of filters on it to see if I could leave it a little more abstract. I think I’ll fade it back a little more next time. The thing is- Outdoor stores are usually pretty crammed with stuff. The kind of crammed that is really tricky and time consuming to draw over and over again. I need to make time to draw a half-dozen or so backgrounds specific to the Outdoor Galore Store and drop them into establishing shots as I go, but most of the time, I only feel like hinting at the clutter and letting the whole background stat in the background. What do you think?
Hints are good enough most of the time, just times like when Durnell was running for his life because Kara came to use a defibrillator on him, and she searched the store in all the ‘big enough to hid a body’ spots and Durnell was being a fly up at the top of a bit of climbing wall in there…. that needed stuff specifically inked in there. Or when Hubris and Kara were riding bikes in the store…
The like the style (agree with you about fading it back a bit, though) but my one concern would be where the photo came from. Even though it seems fairly far removed from the original, the original photographer might still come back and give you crap about it if you haven’t secured the rights to use it. Possibly the same issue with the store itself.
Probably not a big deal, but when Hubris gets to be as large as Garfield or Peanuts, it might be a concern. ๐
And request if you can give that store free publicity.
