I hope ‘pound sand’ isn’t some really obnoxious euphemism these days.
It wasn’t in the dim past, as I recollect it. Doesn’t mean things have changed.
The so-called ‘Urban Dictionary’ is plain wrong on a lot of words, if you ask anyone over 30. And yet…

Greg, what’s interesting about the expression is that William Goldman, screenwriter and novelist on Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid, Marathon Man and The Princess Bride, had one of his main characters literally punching sand on a beach at the beginning of the Marathon Man sequel, Brothers. For him, it was a way of killing time until he got rescued. He was very bored by then.
