Before anyone can point it out- Yes, Dad Biner is concerned about using a weapon “with enough stopping power”, but is also shooting a weapon that requires reloading after only six shots. Two behaviors that you don’t always find in the same people. Live with it, if possible. I have discovered that I much prefer drawing revolvers over automatics. The original version of this strip had nine ‘bam’s, and I had sketched an automatic (something hefty. A Springfield, maybe.) Aaaand I changed it.

I hate to say it, but I miss Lowell. And that’s going some.
Gun nuts tend to put me off my lunch. I have nothing against the use of guns. But fanatics of Any kind make me wonder if the religious nuts are right and it’s the end of the world as we know it… (And, yes, I feel fine.)
Worry not! The next story arc brings back Lowell and another returning cast member. Any guesses?
Hubris’ mom!
Just hope Mr. Biner never gets wound up in a ‘make my day’ law incident.
Yup. The Model 29 SW is a classic.
personally i like my 686 ^_^
Wow. It’s rare to see good pistol techniques in a webcomic. Awesome!
Yeah, you’re not gonna get this kinda pistol-packin’ action in a Dick Tracy cartoon, nor nothin’.
If it was my S&W 357, you’d have to draw another BAM.
This is a fun cartoon, also about guns… and a specific news item about guns lately. Actually, it might be depressing. Or irritating. Depends on your politics.

Can’t. Handle. Incongru. Ity. **********Self destruct sequence activated. Terminating life force in 5…4…3…2…
Mr. Biner must have some pretty odd ideas about the kind of man that Hubris is. This makes me wonder if it is solely his masculine point of view on the world or if his Daughter has dated some less than savory characters in her past.
By the way, stopping power isn’t about how many rounds a weapon holds. It’s about stopping a human with the fewest rounds necessary. And Mr. Biner is wrong that a .22 has no stopping power.
I’ve tried to get into conversations about this kind of thing with a few different people. When I don’t already have a pretty solid background in ballistics, or shooting theory or whatever they wanna call it, I tend to get judged. Which might be fine, if only I’d get the damned information I’m trying to learn from the person who has now judged me to be some kind of communist or socialist or some other ist because I don’t already know why he has the opinions about caliber or style of firearm that he has. So I don’t learn anything and I get ticked at being treated like an idiot for no reason I can come up with. Thence this whole story arc, can you tell?
The true key behind the appeal of guns to gun nuts is the kick from the recoil. Smaller caliber guns don’t have that kick, so they feel like toys, or “girlie weapons”. A “real man’s gun” has to knock you backwards a half-step if you’re not standing right. I have a 9mm Ruger with 15- and 17-round clips. If I pull the trigger fast enough, I can empty one clip in under 2 seconds, and pretty much destroy what I’m pointing at. But, there’s not really a lot of kick, so it lacks “stopping power”. Gun nuts will say that I need a .45 cal. at a minimum, because that’s when the recoil will make your hands sting. It’s all about being macho, not about what the bullet itself can do.
Then again, with the modern body armor available these days, you might not even feel a .45 cal. round hitting your bulletproof vest, so even that might not be enough “stopping power” anymore.
That’ s okay. The first time I fired my dad’s 30-06 and it about took my shoulder off even with it parked firm; was more macho than I needed. That turned my shoulder various lovely shades of purple… more fun was going to school the next week with an arm I could barely move.
because to mr biner hubris looks the type who would rob a house. as for the returing cast member. betting its pastes mother coming to give Hubris his money for taking care of him or maybe Lowels boss
All guns have their use. Hubris’s .22 is great for target. The revolver will hardly ever jam, just pull the trigger again. Auto loaders carry more rounds. Hunting will most likely call for something different, although the .22 target rifle would work great on squirrels and wabbits (some Elmer Fudd humor.)
To each their own. I don’t expect Mr. Biner to come around but maybe they’ll still have a little fun.
Also good for plinking striped ground squirrels (gophers) and rats. Did my share of both for target practice. In the spring you’d take a sandwich and a six, go park out in the pasture, and set up to fire by leaning on the pickup roof and thin out the spring crop of gophers. If you were good, you could take out the little ones, not just the big ones. Near dark it would be sit near the grain bins on top the pickup with a good flashlight just as it was getting good and dark and plink rats. Dots on paper were for wusses….
An acquaintance’s brother who lives in Texas likes to hunt deer with a .22LR.
He shoots them in the head, because that’s the only part of the deer he won’t eat.
different rules in the states i guess. pretty sure we are not allowed headshots in canada. something about it being inhumane.
doesn’t leave funky holes in the hide, either. Who wants a nice deer hide with a hole punched in it?
