For some reason that reminds me or the LotR line ”Yeah, but what about ‘second breakfast”’

Back in the beginning, Hubris was less than thrilled when he discovered that Paste had been left on his hands. Even now, he’d probably be more than happy to send Paste back to stepmom and dad. At best, Paste is the kind of kid who will always test and push the boundaries to see how much he can get away with — just as he is doing now with Nikki. That she has rejected his advances (such as they are) is bound to make him even more ornery.

Even so, I suspect that Paste has fared better under Hubris’s supervision than he would have under conventional circumstances. Possibly Hubris realizes this, which may be why he agreed, however reluctantly, to let Paste stay with him (provided Paste worked). And I think that the arrangement works well overall. Yes, Paste still gets into scrapes at times (both literal and figurative), and probably tries Hubris’s patience to the utmost. Still, I think that Hubris’s workplace and lifestyle provide a healthier environment for Paste than a ‘normal’ one would. I believe that it’s better to find a way to temper one’s excesses instead of trying to tamp them down altogether; the latter nearly always results in their erupting in unhealthy and even destructive forms. Whether he intended it or not, big stepbro has helped to prevent Paste from getting into far worse trouble that he probably would have gotten into elsewhere.

As for that red spot on the floor, it’ll probably take more than “first-rate mopping” to get it out. Sure, Paste could tell Nikki what *really* caused it, but I doubt that she would buy it coming from him, so she’ll have to get the scoop from Hubris.
