As I’ve mentioned before… probably several times… I did this trick on a person. Only it was five bucks, not twenty.
But it was all in fun, and I think I gave the kid the five anyhow. Entertainment value and all.
But really, try not to say “Like” a lot. That just irritates people and it’s lazy conversation.
Me? I say, “Y’know” a lot. Way too much. Irritatingly, blitheringly too much. But that’s okay, and doesn’t make me crazy when I’m aware of it while I talk. Y’know.
Also add “…and then…”
I teach English to Japanese speakers, and often the textbook example conversations will include “like”, as in “what’s he like?” or “what does he look like?” None of the students can understand the usage of “like” in these kinds of sentences. It’s a word that’s rather difficult to avoid, ya know?
and that’s where ‘the drink game’ was invented.
Interestingly, heavy use of electronic media seems to have decreased such misuse of single words, although “uh” will probably never die.
Then there’s the CanEHdian, eh? We like to say “eh” a lot … eh.
So if I’m making a trip to Canada, what is the proper emoji for “EH?”
Is it like currency conversion, and I have to change all my texting abbreviations to french-english polyglot ones?
Your “huhs” or “Whats” become eh…
“What did you say” in American is “huh?” Canadian “eh?”
And don’t forget when spelling that to invert e and r on the end of a word, and add extra U’s all over. (Color is now colour, honor is now honour, and center is now centre…. etc)
As for accents. I should do my “Si, what y’all doing, eh? with word 1, 3, and 5 all correctly said. Blows minds. 🙂
Actually, we don’t add letters.
America TAKES letters away, and inverts.
Canada spells the way The United Kingdom has for a couple centuries longer than the US has been around. *wink*
Or, more specifically, English Canadians… You know, Anglophones… Anglos… Blokes…
We French Canadians (French Frogs, Pea Soup Eaters) don’t usually learn to append “eh” to our sentences, when we learn English…
Ah, you were way ahead of me on the “like” problem. Love this way of handling it, though. I might have to try it with my nieces sometime.
I can confirm girls, mainly preppy girls are “like” this.
