I need to eat better. Anyone want to share strategies for eating less? There’s probably something that’ll really click with me, but darned if I know what it is yet.
Yeah, I know that has nothing to do with today’s cartoon, but seriously… I trust you guys to know stuff I don’t.
Oh yeah, make sure no one’s in it. Love the painter dude.
Cashews help with eating something with hunger stopping power. You can make or buy cashew milk and drink it measured out….
Art guy, yeh, I would deed him a porta-unit all to himself.
I find it easier to resist when I’m working out often. “I sweated my butt off to lose that weight – no way I’m having a second slice!” Also, carrot sticks & the like fill you up as snacks without many calories.
Hey, okay yeah? Eating, ok! Yeah, the trick to not eating, ok, so much is, yeah? Don’t buy food. Dude.
LOL
don’t mock Paint Dude.
I’m 30kg overweight! I’d like to know how to stop eating unnecessarily!
Just lost 15kg, 14 to go. Beverages sweetened with stevia, let me fake out stomach I sent it calories. Eating protein to give body something to work on. Cut carbs (I know) way back. I went to measured amounts small meals. I can fake myself out knowing I can eat again in a few hours. Your stomach capacity will shrink. Cut all hidden sugar and go cold turkey on sugar. This will take about a month. You’ll be surprised what they hide corn syrup in, cut that (hidden sugars). You can do it!
there something that sounds normal AND scary at the same time in this conversation. lol
I worked overseas for a few years. Portable outhouses were essentia. The biggest problem was keeping them from being graffitti magnets. It turned out the solution was to have a single sacrificial unit that was left to the mercy of markers. As long as there was one they could deface people left the other reasonably free of defacement. Every few weeks we would move in and spray the solvent in the overly-marked unit and people would start over.
As a somewhat big eater, I found that the best way for me to stop eating along the day while not thinking about food all the time, was to eat meals containing cereals, dairy products and meat. My go-to when I don’t have time is a reasonably sized sandwich made of whole grain bread (one without corn syrup), unsalted butter, a layer of cheese (usually for me it’s gouda, because it’s real easy to find where I live), and ham. A variant I also make contains prosciutto, mozarella and tomatoes. Find your own mixes, and change often if you don’t want to feel bored by your food.
You have to feel full afterwards. If you didn’t, size up the portion. Just, don’t overdo it either…
Small plates – don’t rush – nuts instead of sweets
Yeah…Um…Hi…So, just dropping in after finally catching up on Hubris and co. Personal port-a-pottie, very important. Now weight loss — I used MyFitnessPal for a couple of years and dropped a lot of weight (sadly, I’ve put a lot back). Having said that, I have two go-tos for dealing with the munchies. First, dates and walnuts for breakfast, along with my usual latte. One date and a handful of walnuts (about 1/2 ounce for me — but I’m small), is remarkably filling and satisfying. Also keeps off hunger pangs for a while.
Next (and bigger) trick — brush your teeth shortly after dinner. For me, brushed teeth in the evening means eating is done for the day. I don’t even get the urge to eat anything else.
I was put on my first diet in 1975 (age 11) and have tried just about everything to manage my weight. Portion control really works: use small plates and bowls (and only take one helping), buy snacks in single-serving bags (Costco and Sams sell big boxes of small bags), cut restaurant meals in half when they arrive and save half for later. When drinking something that isn’t water, pick the smallest cup, can or bottle and alternate sips of sugar drink with plain water. Cut out cheese, mayo, butter and other fatty additives whenever possible (you won’t notice they are missing after a while). Let yourself snack on fruits and veggies whenever you are hungry. Eat smaller meals and frequent snacks. Be sure that every meal has fruits and veggies in it. Oatmeal with a spoon of nut butter, a spoon of honey and a lot of dried fruit is very filling and anti-cholesterol. Eat slowly and savor your food. (Wow, this reads like one of those little motivational books with one sentence on each page.)
One good trick for eating less is to keep your brain happy. Eat more often, make it healthy snacks of a proper size, lose weight. From your hobbies, it sounds like you are already active enough. Part of the problem with getting older, is the slower metabolism. You can be healthy, work out and still gain weight because of your habits. Big cardio load because you went for a bike ride, overloads the system and you not only lose the benefit from the exercise, you gain weight.
Have healthy snacks like celery, carrots, non buttered popcorn (gotta watch the peanuts.. big source of fats) raisins (gotta limit them a bit.. sugar)
Change it up. Instead of a pocketful of baby carrots, take a peeler to a carrot and marinade it in hotsauce with balsamic vinegar. Freeze grapes. That way it seems more like a treat than a diet.
Hubris is probably going to charge him “Dealer’s fee” of making signs for the festival. He always strikes me as charitable to a fault, but not to the point of losing things he cares about (love/hate relationship with the shop at this point..)
Whatever your food-choices…
…EAT SLOWLY!!!
Give your brain time to realize that it’s getting input.
You’ll get the same satisfaction from less food.
I got some advice from a doc about losing weight about 40 years ago. He told me to stop putting food in my mouth. He never knew how close he came to eating a knuckle sandwich!
The one thing that’s helped me is not eating less – it’s eating more. I make a list of vegetables I need to eat and how much of each one. If I get all that done, I’m usually not all that interested in the allergy stuff I really like (that makes me break out in fat.)
I don’t want the advice to stop, because it’s great, but I did want to throw a “Thanks Everyone!” in here because it felt overdue already.
Who else has good stuff to pass along?
Healthy portion control. Measure out what a serving size for one is and prepare and cook that for yourself (chicken, rice and steamed veggies are easy and lean$. Snacks like carrot sticks, fruit and nuts, measure them out for serving size (there are apps and websites that help with this), store them a container for the day and once you’ve finished, your finished for the day.
It’s easy if your partner joins with you, but if not, it’s a good idea to ask them to store their snacks somewhere else so you’re not tempted.
Drinking lots of water, if you start to get hungry, drinking water helps covers it up.
Actually, I can probably convince my brother to email you some tips. He has a nutrition degree from Tennessee Tech University, he’s cut like a beast, and I’m on vacation with him now. He works in a nursing home and makes sure they get proper nutrition.
Write everything you eat down. there are things you won’t eat because it seems like a hassle to get out your notepad.
The one secret that has helped me on my diet: my wife. She counts the calories and various grams of everything. She also prevents me from raiding the fridge out of boredom. Her secret is the myfitnesspal app, a lot more fresh, home made meals, and a lot less food from cans and boxes.
I was going to say, I was walking to the gym a couple weeks back, during the wind storm.
I almost made it, but the wind blew me into the donut shop beside the gym.
Hey there. About eating less, You may want to think instead about eating DIFFERENT. SOMETIMES, it seems, that can take a more realistic type of willpower. Everyone is different, but this is what worked TOO well for me – I found myself passing out and underweight! This was at 46, and I know my metabolism had already shifted (although I’m trying to brace for more shift!)
1) I tried and found some raw veggies I liked, that I actually enjoyed WITHOUT the dips (not hummas, not anything). If you can manage it, it keeps a dip from getting over used. I was already with grazing on fruits, but the veggies really boosted the fiber and full effect, with not as much sugars. Bell peppers (anything except green!), rainbow whole, not baby, carrots (purples are amazingly sweet, along with reds), those mini cucumbers unpeeled, sugar snap peas – these really worked for me. Along with whatever fruits, just not ONLY fruits anymore. Having those, plus about 3 hard boiled eggs on hand, for all day munching between meals, and I rarely felt hungry. Plan out how much per day, and when the munchies hit, I’d hit those instead.
2) Smoothies. With fruit, frozen fruit, yogurt, and almond “milk”. I’d use flavored milk and yogurt. And protein powder. Probably other good stuff you could find for your own blend. Find a couple that work for you, pour them out and freeze individual portions, then “grab and go”. Just be careful about any powders that contain soy or soy products (MANY meal shakes do). You’re a guy – your body probably doesn’t need stuff it sees as estrogen!
3) As someone already said, exercise. For you (also someone already said this) that may not be a problem. However, after all of your health and blood clotting crud, have you been able to ramp yourself back up to your desired activity level yet?
4) Weights. I’m not a power lifter, but hooooly CROW did that do a ton (unintended pun!) I’m taking a break, because like I said earlier, I got a bit out of balance, but the “system” I used (will use again) is Stronglifts 5×5. It’s pretty simple, and doesn’t have to take a ton of time.
A book that helped my father TONS? “Younger Next Year”. There’s one written for women I read, that was pretty good too.
Good luck to you! I have a hunch you wouldn’t be asking for “cosmetic” reasons, so I’m just a wee bit nervous for ‘ya!
😉
I don’t believe that Bob and Vince have met yet, have they? And when they do… If you think you’ve already heard strange dialogue in these parts, you ain’t heard nothin’ yet.
