We recently got some neighborhood improvements made. One of the improvements were the grate covers over the storm drains. There was a very specific reason for the change from one kind of grate to the other. The reason involved the previous neighborhood improvement.
QUIZ FOR YOU:
What was the previous neighborhood improvement that led directly to this improvement?
The only thing I can think of is maybe street sweeping?
Cyclists with skinny tyres are in danger from the “Slots o’ Death” storm drain (on the left), especially as painted-in bike lanes tend to include them at no extra charge. MTB’ers with proper-sized rubber are in no danger (what, me biased? :-))
So I’m guessing it was bike lanes.
I’m with Won. If they put in a narrow bike lane, the slots would have eaten a road bike tire.
It’s been 20+ years since I bike commuted in Memphis. At the time, I’m pretty sure I was the only one. It is still a death race?
Won and Jeff are right. We got new bikelanes connecting two different Greenlines.
Did some ducklings ever fall in? A city council wouldn’t care much for bike tires, but would be horrified if something cute got lost down there.
Shoulda just rotated the slotted grates 90 degrees …
