Um… deja vu and reruns… It IS post-thanksgiving… I guess I can get tired of recycled turkey long before I get tired of recycled Hubris…
Re-runs make me uptight.
I still don’t understand what happened to make the last week a repeat week. Possibly something to do with thanksgiving, a holiday my country doesn’t run. Is it a joke, or did you get hacked, or did something else happen? I hope all is well.
I like the cycle stand in the second panel. I assume it’s based on a real structure. Is it strong enough to balance someone on it whilst they are still learning how to balance, or is it really off the ground like the picture sort of indicates? Clever idea anyhow. Otherwise it would always be lying on its side in the dust when not in use.
Not hacked, but an update to the software made things go all scatty-boo. We lost some things because the most recent update saved the scatty-boo. The most recent USEFUL update put us back to the 23rd. And today sees us all caught up. Tomorrow will have a new cartoon. Yay!
Those unicycle stands exist, but they don’t hold up a rider on the wheel. Best to learn on a wheel that’ll move unrestricted, and in a fashion that leaves you unrestricted too. (I’ve watched people who insist on learning “while I lean on this wall”. You can’t learn how to balance anything while leaning against a wall. You have to balance. Remember learning to walk? Sure you do. Same thing. Clamber against something to get vertical, then go. Drag a hand along something (for a toddler, maybe the couch. For a unicycler, maybe a wall or a handrail) as though you’re about to let go and just keep your legs moving. Eventually, things start to click and you add more skills. Like mounting a unicycle without the help of any standing structure.
Another stand that functions the same way a unicycle stand does is a guitar stand. Same issues, similar solution.
Yeah, holds it off the ground when you’re not using it. Watching your thousand-dollar axe hit the ground after leaning it against the amp because you’re too cheap to blow $15 bucks on a cheap stand ($45 for a nice Hercules in my case) can be a very sickening experience. Even though they’re more durable, you still don’t want your transportation just lying on the ground getting dirty or where someone will step on it or something.
My dad invented a thing to keep guitars from falling. Customers of his would come into the store to get the necks of their guitars fixed. While jumping around on stage, their guitar straps would come loose from the stock buttons meant to connect them to the guitar. Pow. And people don’t like their nice expensive guitars to fall head first to the stage. So my dad made these leather-and-button things called StrapLocks. I think they paid my and my brothers way well into college. He eventually sold the rights to the people who bought his guitar store, and I don’t see any photos of that particular kind of thing on Google, so I’m not sure how many people are likely to remember them. It looks like other versions that’re all metal are the popular things now.
I had one on my first bass, back in 1985! Leather tab with a button for the strap, with another tab that buttons over the strap? Worked great, stock button was mounted at a weird angle to begin with. Thanks to your dad for the great idea!
Yeah! Those were the ones! 1985… you had one that my brother made! He was, I think, the total labor force at StrapLock Central (Cecils’ Bandstand) around that time.
Yeah, baby! Making StrapLocks after school paid for my gas… and beverages… and camping gear. Not necessarily in that order.
