Well, here we are again with my favorite aphorism: “It’s the assumptions you don’t know you’re making that do you the most harm.”
That gem was distilled down from a whole paragraph that Douglas Adams (usually more succinct when it came to brilliant observation) wrote in his book “Last Chance To See”. I don’t know if the book is still in print. But if you find any in a book store, buy a few of them. Read one of them, and then you’ll be glad to have the others to loan and give as gifts. That’s my advice. The book’s a little dated. Some of the creatures that Douglas and Mark Carwardine went to see are no longer extant- White Rhinos, for instance. Yangtse Dolphins for another. But the point remains that the book is entertaining, informative and as with any of Douglas Adams’ writing- hilarious.
Too bleeping true, especially if you are an an only, or the first one in a longer than 3 month relationship!
Oh so bleeping true.
Communication is an underappreciated form of communicating. [nodnods]
It would be great if people did more of it Before things go off the rails. It really does help some times.
Kara: “It’s not my responsibility to make her happy, and if she isn’t, it’s not my responsibility to rectify the situation. But, if it’s going to take my getting married, settling down, and spitting out rugrats for the rest of my life to make her happy, then by god I’m going to make darn sure that I’M happy first.”
Hubris: “So, this is going to turn into another contest that you HAVE to win?”
Kara: “If I’m lucky, yes. I’d be happy with that.”
Both Amazon and Barnes&Noble have the book.
Now she’s having a good conversation and she did ask Hubris if he was Happy. It seems history can get in the way of the now; her past relationship with her mom determines the relationship with her now. That’s always hard to change.
What’s that old saying? “Don’t assume, you’ll make an ASS of U and ME?”
LoL
oh she was having conversations with mum hubris other wise she would not have brought up their relationship and if it will end with those two as a husband and wife.
Last Chance To See I knew as a TV series and book combo from the BBC. It was followed up recently (in 2009) by a new BBC series with Stephen Fry, someone at least slightly qualified to replace the late great Douglas Adams.
If you liked you liked the first series, you’ll like the new one too.
