Comic strips are supposed to
Comic strips have been one of our most popular forms of entertainment for years. Back when 3D entertainment didn’t exist, and the gadgets of today were a long way off, we had these to look forward to in comic book form, or in the newspapers. For those who aren’t familiar with comic strips, what are they supposed to do?
Give you a respite from every day life
We all need a little break from our every day struggles, but we don’t necessarily have time to delve into a book. And we don’t always have access to FoxyBingo, so we need an alternative. That’s why comic strips are so popular, because they succeed in a short space of time to entertain you.
Make you laugh
The mission of a comic strip, first and foremost is to make you laugh. Hence having the word ‘comic’ included. The comedy is derived from the images, situation the characters are in, and the witty dialogue that goes with them. Often they will be funny because they depict a situation that is a well known fact of life. The rest create comedy through the absurd.
Make you see things in another light
Comic strips very often have a hidden message inside them. It’s not necessarily obvious to you, in fact a lot of the time it’s very well hidden. It’s not unusual for a satirical element to nudge your brain into looking at a situation in a new way though, simply through the device of playful mockery.
Be clever
From the way the narrative unfolds, to the funny twist at the end, to the characters, to the writing, a comic strip is intended to be clever. Whether it’s the imagination that makes it seem clever, or the way it’s put together, you can always rely on a strip to evoke cleverness in its most basic form.
